Germany: Lawsuit over Donald Trump’s 35% border tax at WTO? economy minister says

angela-merkel-munich.jpgGermany’s economy minister has said that the country could file a law suit against the US at the World Trade Organization if Donald Trump implements his proposed border tax. Speaking to broadcaster Deutschlandfunk on Friday, Brigitte Zypries said that if Mr Trump implemented the tax, it would be incredibly complex for the whole system and the adjustment would take a long time.

It is “clearly laid out” in WTO agreements that you are “not allowed to charge more than 2.5 per cent taxes on imports of cars”, she said.

She added that she’s banking on both the President’s “rationality”  and the power of the law to make ensure that the tax does not come into effect.

Mr Trump has in the past warned that the US will impose a border tax of 35 per cent on cars that BMW plans to build at a new plant in Mexico and export to the US market.
