NBN BROAD-BAND problems: It took seven technicians + 3 MONTHS to install my NBN

WHEN I started working from home, the promise of a lightning-fast NBN connection was irresistible. But seven technicians and three months later, I’m not sure whether it was actually worth it.

This is my frustrating NBN journey.

STAGE ONE: SHOCK AND DENIAL

As my fiancee hangs up the phone, I know before he says anything that today is not our day. Again.

By the time the seventh technician, Mohammed, arrives, my faith in humanity has reached the lowest point since my failure to win Dolly Magazine’s Model Search as a chubby, bespectacled 14-year-old.

I explain this to Mohammed, but he hasn’t heard of Dolly Magazine. He has, however, heard of the Telstra Room, and procured a key for it.

STAGE SIX: ACCEPTANCE AND HOPE

Even when Mohammed leaves, with our new NBN connection working, I can’t summon any good feelings about it. Perhaps it will just take time.

I call my friend with the mantras and tell her that the mantras aren’t working anymore and I’ve run out of vodka. She suggests that I Google a good psychologist. I decide to use the library’s connection for this.

‘Apocalyptic’: 10,000 evacuated in France as wild fire blazes

At least 10,000 people were evacuated overnight after a new wild fire broke out in southern France, which was already battling massive blazes that have consumed swathes of forest, authorities said Wednesday.

The new fire came a day after France asked for Europe’s help to tackle the flames already raging in the tinder dry south, including near the popular resort of Saint-Tropez.

“The evacuations, at least 10,000, followed the progression of the fire. It’s an area that doubles or triples its population in summer,” said a fire service official of the blaze near Bormes-les-Mimosas on the Mediterranean coast.

The number of people on France’s Cote d’Azur bulges in July and August as holidaymakers head to the beach, though the area is experiencing an exceptionally hot, dry summer that has made it especially vulnerable to fires.

On Tuesday over 4,000 firefighters and troops backed by 19 water bombers had already been mobilised to extinguish the flames, which have left swathes of charred earth in their wake.

Iran shootings: Parliament and Khomeini shrine attacked

Armed men have opened fire at the Iranian parliament and the shrine of Ayatollah Khomeini in the capital, Tehran, Iranian media report.

At least one gunman fired shots inside parliament, wounding a guard, news agencies said. There are conflicting reports of other people hurt.

There are also reports of a shooting at the mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini, the founder of the modern state.

A witness told Reuters news agency that the incident at parliament was “over”.

Security forces had massed inside and outside the building, the witness said.

Syrian army shoots down armed Israeli drone which killed 3 soldiers

Troops loyal to the Syrian government shot down a drone overnight suspected of killing three soldiers on Friday in southwestern Syria, according to the reports.

The armed drone was struck down by anti-aircraft units of the Syrian ground forces operating in the Quneitra province, the Al-Masdar newspaper said.

According to the outlet, Syrian troops were attacked in the area between the towns of Al Hamidiyah and Abu Shabta as they made in-roads into territories held by militant forces.

Syrian armed forces reportedly shot down two suspected Israeli drones in the past couple of months.

Syria and Israel have been technically at war since Israeli forces took control over a large part of Golan Heights five decades ago.

Deposed S. Korean president arrested, jailed after long saga

South Korea’s disgraced former President Park Geun-hye was arrested and jailed Friday over the corruption allegations that already ended her tumultuous four-year rule and prompted an election to find a successor.

A convoy of vehicles, including a black sedan carrying Park, entered a detention facility near Seoul before dawn after the Seoul Central District Court granted a prosecutors’ request to arrest her.

Many Park supporters waved national flags and shouted “president” as Park’s car entered the facility. An opponent held up a mock congratulatory ribbon with flowers that read “Park Geun-hye, congratulations for entering prison. Come out as a human being after 30 years.”

Prosecutors can detain Park for up to 20 days, during which they are expected to formally charge her and have her jailed during the next several months of court procedures. A district court in South Korea normally issues a ruling within six months of an indictment.

Germany: Lawsuit over Donald Trump’s 35% border tax at WTO? economy minister says

Germany’s economy minister has said that the country could file a law suit against the US at the World Trade Organization if Donald Trump implements his proposed border tax. Speaking to broadcaster Deutschlandfunk on Friday, Brigitte Zypries said that if Mr Trump implemented the tax, it would be incredibly complex for the whole system and the adjustment would take a long time.

It is “clearly laid out” in WTO agreements that you are “not allowed to charge more than 2.5 per cent taxes on imports of cars”, she said.

She added that she’s banking on both the President’s “rationality”  and the power of the law to make ensure that the tax does not come into effect.

Mr Trump has in the past warned that the US will impose a border tax of 35 per cent on cars that BMW plans to build at a new plant in Mexico and export to the US market.

Oscars: Big night for black actors after 2016 controversy

This year’s show saw Mahershala Ali and Viola Davis scoop awards for best supporting actor and actress. Ali became the first Muslim actor to win the award and Davis accepted her first Oscar win.
