Big four banks face mounting pressure to lift interest rates

Interest rate sign outside bankAustralia’s largest banks may be forced to impose “out of cycle” mortgage rate hikes as global interest rates push higher.

There is speculation they cannot afford the political fallout of raising interest rates while the banking royal commission is underway.

But JP Morgan’s chief economist Sally Auld disagrees with the argument that the political cost would be “too high” for the big four banks.

Why the RBA can’t move

Some economists see the Reserve Bank hiking interest rates before the end of the year. Ian Verrender reckons they’re dreaming.
“What that [view] ignores is the fact that they’re businesses with a clear commercial imperative, at the end of the day, they care about their margins and preserving it,” she said.

Dramatic CCTV video shows prison officers beating inmates in WA jails

Stark footage of WA prison staff using excessive force on inmates has been released by the Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC) as part of a damning series of reports about serious misconduct in prisons. The CCC said unreasonable force was used against prisoners in several incidents at jails in 2016 and 2017.

Dramatic vision from three such incidents has been released, two of them involving the use of chemical agents on prisoners at Eastern Goldfields prison in 2017.

Capsicum spray used on inmates In the first, on May 4, a guard was dealing with a 51-year-old minimum security prisoner who took hold of a door handle and would not let go.Within nine seconds of the prisoner holding the door handle, the officer “requested chemical agent from his colleague” and used it almost immediately.

The Commission said the use of the capsicum spray was not in line with Department of Justice policies and there was an “unacceptable risk of hydraulic eye damage”.The officer had placed his colleagues at risk, the CCC said, although evidence from other officers suggested the prisoner presented no threat. The officer’s own report did not explain why he deployed the agent.

ABC, Fairfax criticised by judge in Chau Chak Wing defamation case for using MP’s comments

A Federal Court judge has criticised the ABC and Fairfax for attempting to use comments made by a federal MP as proof allegations of bribery against Chau Chak Wing were true. The Chinese-Australian businessman and political donor is suing the two media organisations, as well as journalist Nick McKenzie, for defamation over a Four Corners program and accompanying online story published on June 5, 2017.

Mr Chau argues that among some of the imputations the story conveyed were that he bribed or was involved in a scheme to bribe the former president of the United Nations General Assembly, John Ashe.

The ABC and Fairfax wish to file a defence relying on, among other things, a May speech by the Federal MP Andrew Hastie in which he used parliamentary privilege to name Mr Chau as a co-conspirator in the Ashe matter. When that was raised in an interlocutory hearing on Wednesday, Justice Steven Rares said it was “extraordinary” that the media companies were “trying to use that as evidence of truth” and that is was an abuse of parliamentary privilege.”The fact that Mr Hastie wants to say something doesn’t prove anything,” he said.

Scarborough Beach twin towers plan given green light after revised design approved

A twin-tower development up to 43 storeys high will be built on Perth’s iconic Scarborough Beach after a revised plan was given the tick of approval.

The project, put forward by Chinese-backed developers 3 Oceans, will see two mixed-use residential and hotel accommodation towers of 43 and 33 storeys built on Scarborough Beach Road near the main beach.

The towers will be more than double the height of the existing tallest structure along the beach, the 18-storey Rendezvous Hotel. The Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA) initially rejected a proposed $400 million plan, which included two towers — one of 43 storeys and another of 35 storeys — over concerns it was a significant overdevelopment of the site.

Fiery scenes in WA Parliament as women MPs reveal colleagues’ offensive behaviour

A fiery and emotional debate has erupted in the Western Australian Parliament about the treatment of female MPs in the wake of an incident last week when a senior minister was accused of “feigning a headbutt” towards Nationals leader Mia Davies.

Ms Davies referred the alleged behaviour of Water Minister Dave Kelly to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly last Thursday, claiming it “bordered on intimidatory”.But on Tuesday Speaker Peter Watson said he would not take the complaint any further and was satisfied Mr Kelly “did not move his head in the Member’s direction”.

Mr Kelly has repeatedly denied the allegation and has the support of the Premier Mark McGowan who said the allegations were “fabricated”. But the response sparked an emotional plea from Ms Davies, who urged her colleagues to refer the matter to a powerful committee for further investigation.”I’m happy to come to this place, I am happy to be criticised, I am happy to have members opposite pull our policy apart … we expect that,” she told the chamber.”But I expect that when one member of this place says they feel uncomfortable, that it is not mocked by those opposite.”‘Extraordinarily offensive’

The unravelling of Barnaby JoyceHere’s the story of how the former Nationals leader brought himself undone.”It begs the question, if Barney agreed to be a part of it, how could he allow his four girls to be overlooked? Strong winds send portable toilets flying through the sky in US

YOU could be mistaken for thinking s–t has literally hit the fan in an alarming video where two portaloos took flight in a strong gust of wind in the US.Rubbish and tissues begin flying around in a suburban park and parents and children can be seen huddling on the ground for safety before one of the portable toilets slams into a nearby car and then launches into the air like something out of ‘Mary Poopins’ – an uncouth sequel. The portaloo can be seen spraying what we can only hope is washing-up water as it careens across the sky.The other portaloo then takes off, spraying liquid in the direction of park-goers who try to take cover, while a nearby marquee gets ripped out of the ground. The video was posted to Facebook on Monday and has since racked up more than one million views.

You’re probably sick of hearing about data and privacy by now–especially because, if you live in the United States, you might feel like there’s very little you can do to protect yourself from giant corporations feeding off your time, interests, and personal information.

So how do you walk the line between taking advantage of the internet’s many benefits while protecting yourself from the corporate interests that aim to use your data for gain? This is the push-and-pull I’ve had with myself over the past year, as I’ve grappled with the revelations that Cambridge Analytica has the personal data of more than 50 million Americans, courtesy of Facebook, and used it to manipulate people in the 2016 elections. I’ve watched companies shut down their European branches because Europe’s data privacy regulations invalidate their business models. And given the number of data breaches that have occurred over the past decade, there’s a good chance that malicious hackers have my info–and if they don’t, it’s only a matter of time.

#Perth weather: looming cold front to deliver Perth’s wettest June for five years

The rain will be back in force in Perth by early next week.Perth is set to record its wettest June for five years inside the first 19 days of the month – with another cold front poised to deliver a soaking to the city.

And the metropolitan gauge may also have received its average rainfall for June by Tuesday.

The latest in a series of cold fronts that have rolled across the coast is set to arrive from late Sunday night and deliver as much as 40mm of rain to Perth on Monday.

There could be up to another 23mm across Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Perth is probably going to start seeing the front from about midnight on Sunday,” Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster James Ashley said.

“When it hits there is going to be plenty of heavy rain and also likely some squally winds to go with it.

“The rain is going to be seen pretty much right across the west and South West of the state.”

The rainfall will spread far enough east to deliver up to 10mm to farming areas like Cunderdin and Merredin but there will probably only be weak rainfall (5 to 10mm) east of Albany towards Esperance.

But Perth needs only another 29mm to post its wettest winter since 2012, when 140mm fell in the metropolitan gauge.

Matthew Fisher-Turner murder trial hears brother was ‘afraid of getting caught’ #Perth man sobbed uncontrollably as he detailed to police how his brother was fatally stabbed by their father, who then told him to bury the body in the backyard

Matthew Fisher-Turner takes a seflie while standing on a beach wearing a black cap and jumper.A 28-year-old Perth man sobbed uncontrollably as he detailed to police how his brother was fatally stabbed by their father, who then told him to bury the body in the backyard before leaving to watch the AFL grand final.

In October 2016, Joshua Fisher-Turner was being interviewed by detectives investigating the murder of his 23-year-old brother Matthew, whose body was found in a hole in the yard four weeks after he was last seen alive.

Mr Fisher-Turner and his 21-year-old sister Hannah are on trial in the WA Supreme Court, accused of trying to cover up the killing. Their 67-year-old father Ernest Fisher is accused of murder.

In the recorded interview played to the court today, Joshua Fisher-Turner initially maintained he had last seen Matthew on the day of the AFL grand final when his brother packed a bag and told him he was going on holidays.

However, about an hour an into the interview — and after detectives put to him what evidence they had in the case — Mr Fisher-Turner broke down, describing his brother as an “arsehole to everyone” and claiming he physically abused him, his father and his two younger sisters.

UFC 225: Robert Whittaker earns decision victory over Yoel Romero

Screenshot from 2018-06-10 16-03-46.png

Robert Whittaker has earned a razor-thin decision victory over Yoel Romero in an instant classic at UFC 225 in Chicago.

In one of the most dramatic fights of the year, the 27-year-old Australian was repeatedly dropped to the canvas by his hulking Cuban rival.

In the fifth and final round in particular, Whittaker (20-4) survived an astonishing amount of punishment on his way to a split decision win.

Two of the three judges ruled that the middleweight champion had done enough to win three of the five rounds.

There will be plenty of debate about the decision because Romero (13-3) had the most significant moments of the fight and he arguably deserved a 10-8 scorecard for the fifth round.

The UFC 225 main event was a rematch of the pair’s first meeting in July last year, which the Australian won on points after a five-round war.

It was supposed to be for Whittaker’s UFC middleweight championship, but the UFC removed the title from the equation after Romero missed weight.

#Perth in for weekend of wet weather, gusty winds. Half a month’s rain in just two days

A woman wearing a red coat walks along a footpath carrying a buckling umbrella above her head with traffic in the background.Get the umbrellas ready — Perth is set for a weekend of wet weather.

A complex storm front on Saturday night and into Sunday will drench the state with up to 50 millimetres of rainfall, possible thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching 90 kilometres per hour.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster James Ashley said the storm front would cause Perth to hit the halfway mark for the average June rainfall of 173 millimetres in just two days.

“We’re going to have a pretty rainy period Saturday night until about lunchtime on Sunday,” he said.

“About 1:00pm, the wet weather will pass and it will clear up. But between 7:00 tonight and 1:00 tomorrow afternoon, the Perth area is likely to see falls of 20 to 50 millimetres or more with the passage of that system.

“I’d expect coastal parts of the metropolitan area will see winds of up to 80km an hour easing as they get further inland.”

Mr Ashley said while the rain would be heavy at times, it would not be enough to cause significant flooding.

Two police officers and a member of the public have risked life and limb to pull a man free from a burning car after it rolled in Gympie, north of Brisbane.

Senior Constable Kevin Mayo and Constable Jeremy Gardiol were called to the single-vehicle crash on Chappel Street about 7:00am on Wednesday, where they found the car on its side, with smoke billowing from the engine.

With the flames building, the two long-time Gympie patrol officers used their batons and kicked the windscreen to smash through and free the man inside and drag him to safety, with help from a passer-by.

The 73-year-old driver and sole occupant was taken to Gympie Hospital with minor head injuries.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze a short time later.

Senior Sergeant Greg Davey was full of praise for the rescuers.

“There was a heap of smoke, it was imminent that it was going to burst in to flames at any time,” Senior Sergeant Davey said.

Record rainfall and 40,000 without power as storm batters WA coast

A houseboat sinking off the coast of Mandurah.MORE than 40,000 properties are without power in southern WA after damaging winds and heavy rainfall battered the coast.

A severe weather warning is in place for a second day for parts of the Pilbara and Gascoyne districts, extending to the lower South West region, due to a rain band and a separate strong cold front.

The State’s electricity utility Western Power says restoring power to customers from Kalbarri to Albany, including Perth, may be slow as bad weather hampers the clean-up process.

State Emergency Service crews have responded to 65 calls for help since Monday.

In Mandurah a houseboat was witnessed sinking at the Dawesville foreshore reserve about 9.30am this morning.

It was reported Water Police attempted to reach the vessel and a smaller yellow boat, but left about 10am as conditions became too dangerous.
