Bodger and Badger creator Andy Cunningham dies aged 67

Andy Cunningham, the creator of children’s TV show Bodger and Badger, has died from cancer at the age of 67.

He also starred in the BBC show, in which he played handyman Simon Bodger and provided the voice for the beret-wearing badger that loved mashed potato.

Mr Cunningham died at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton on Monday.

His sister Tessa said he “lived to be loved and to make people laugh, starting with me, his little sister”.

‘Funniest big brother’

Mr Cunningham, who read English at Cambridge, gave comedian Julian Clary his first job when he was writing and directing for the Covent Garden Community Theatre Group, and he worked as a puppeteer in the Star Wars film Return of the Jedi.

“He had a quicksilver brain, a rebellious attitude, boundless compassion particularly for the underdog, unstinting levels of generosity and, of course, a passion for mashed potato,” Ms Cunningham said…

At least 12 killed in rare militant attack in Tehran

Suicide bombers and gunmen attacked Iran’s parliament and the Mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini in Tehran on Wednesday morning, killing at least 12 people in a twin assault at the heart of the Islamic Republic, Iranian officials and media said.

Islamic State claimed responsibility and released a video purporting to show gunmen inside the parliament building and one body, apparently dead, on the floor.

The rare attacks were the first claimed by the hardline Sunni Muslim militant group inside in the tightly controlled Shi’ite Muslim country. Islamic State has regularly threatened Iran, one of the powers leading the fight against the militants’ forces in neighboring Iraq and, beyond that, Syria.

The raids took place at a particularly charged time after Iran’s main regional rival Saudi Arabia and other Sunni powers cut ties with Qatar on Monday, accusing it of backing Tehran and militant groups.

The incident could exacerbate tensions in Iran between newly re-elected President Hassan Rouhani, a pragmatist, and his rivals among hardline clerics and the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Attackers dressed as women burst through parliament’s main entrance in central Tehran, deputy interior minister Mohammad Hossein Zolfaghari said, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

One of them detonated a suicide vest in the parliament, he said. About five hours after the first reports, Iranian media said four people who had attacked parliament were dead and the incident was over.

Inside Trump’s secretive immigration court: far from scrutiny and legal aid

Behind two rows of high fencing, winding coils of razor wire, and surrounded by thick forest in central Louisiana, hundreds of miles from the nearest major city, stands a newly created court the Trump administration hopes will fast track the removal of undocumented immigrants.

Hearings take place in five poky courtrooms behind reinforced grey doors where the public benches, scratched with graffiti, are completely empty. There is no natural light. The hallways are lined with detainees in yellow jumpsuits awaiting their turn before a judge. The five sitting judges were quietly flown in by the US justice department from cities across the United States and will be rotated again within two weeks.

The 8 most horrifying moments from ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

The 8 most horrifying moments from ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

The first three episodes of Hulu’s incredible adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s novel are now streaming, and while viewers have been quick to draw comparisons between the fictional dystopia of Gilead — which treats women as objects and denies them agency over their own bodies (hmm!) — and the current political climate in America, the painful truth is that many of the issues central to the series have plagued humanity from the get-go.

In fact, what made Atwood’s novel so potent when it was published in 1985 — and what makes it so relevant today — is that the author didn’t have to invent much of the narrative at all…

Here are the eight most horrifying moments from the first three episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale, titled “Offred,” “Birth,” and “Late,” which will be giving us nightmares for months. Spoilers ahead!

Scandlines ferries EVACUATED after mysterious ‘threat’ to vessels sailing between Germany and Denmark

FERRY operator Scandlines today briefly evacuated all its ferries in the Danish town Rodby and suspended ferry traffic between Denmark and Germany following a telephone threat. “All ferry operations have been suspended, and the ferries will be emptied as soon as the police allows them to go to port,” a Scandlines spokesperson said.

The local police said the suspension came after it had received a telephone call, but declined to elaborate.

However, cops later announced they had searched and cleared the first ferries at the Danish ports Rodby and Gedser and allowed them to resume operations.

Ferry routes between Denmark and Sweden, which had also been suspended due to the threats, were resumed shortly after, police said.

Iran attacks: 5 dead, reports Multiple gunshots outside the parliament building in Tehran

Breaking: 5 dead, state new agency reports

  • Multiple attacks are being reported in Iran’s capital of Tehran according to state media.
  • Armed attackers stormed Iran’s parliament building, killing five people and taking some hostage, state-run Fars News Agency reports.
  • At least two people have been wounded in a bomb attack and shooting spree at the Imam Khomeini mausoleum south of city, Fars News Agency reports.
  • One of the perpetrators has blown himself up, according to multiple state media outlets.

Iran’s Fars News Agency is reporting that at least five people have died in the assault on parliament with 25 others caught up in the attack.

Initial reports suggest four attackers opened fire on guards as they made their way into the building, which is where the majority of injuries appears to have occurred, FNA says.

The agency says ten of those wounded are civilians who were visiting local government deputies from their constituencies. It also reported that one of the perpetrators managed to escape but a lawmaker told the state agency that he was captured on the run.

As the situation is still fluid there are conflicting reports of gunfire heard within the building. So far, the Iranian government has yet to release any information on the incidents.

Omran Daqneesh, young face of Aleppo suffering, seen on Syrian TV

Omran Daqneesh, the boy whose bloodied, dusty face became the image suffering in rebel-held Aleppo, is once again appearing on video clips being shared worldwide.

Omran caught the world’s attention when he was filmed, dazed, sitting in an ambulance after being pulled from the rubble of his family’s home last August, after an apparent regime or Russian airstrike.
He is silent despite the cacophony around him, and reaches up to touch his bloodied temple. He pulls his hand away, sticky with blood, and looks at it uncomprehendingly.
“He was in extreme shock,” a spokesman for the Aleppo Media Center, an activist group, said at the time. He was taken to hospital but released shortly after.
Rescue workers at the time said several other people were killed and many more wounded by the airstrike, including women and children. Omran’s 10-year-old brother Ali was among the dead.

Fifty years ago: The engine that rewrote #F1 history – Ford Cosworth DFV

Fifty years ago on Sunday, the Lotus 49 appeared in public for the first time. Had you been present at the Dutch Grand Prix that weekend, it would not have seemed credible that this was the debut of a car, and particularly an engine, capable of rewriting F1 history. Low key does not make a start.

When Mercedes and Ferrari arrived in Spain to begin the European sector of the current season, every additional aerodynamic nuance, no matter how tiny, was recorded, examined and discussed in mind-numbing detail. No surprise, perhaps, because these two teams are championship contenders.

Back in 1967, Lotus was hardly unknown thanks to having won 25 grands prix and two world championships. You would think, with the introduction of a totally new car from the pen of the mercurial Colin Chapman, plus a brand new engine, their arrival in Zandvoort might have caused a stir. By today’s standards, it would be the equivalent of Red Bull turning up in Baku with a Mercedes engine in the back of a revolutionary Newey chassis…

Major delays at Sydney Airport after storm knocks out radio frequencies

Passengers were experiencing significant delays at Sydney Airport late on Wednesday after a storm knocked out a number of radio frequencies, cutting some communication between planes and the control tower.

Airservices Australia, which manages the country’s air space, said there were “significant delays” to flights during the late afternoon peak and planes had been placed in holding patterns above Sydney for up to an hour.

Aircraft due to depart had also been affected by the outage, which began to occur as the storm intensified shortly before 4pm.

From midnight until 5.40pm on Wednesday, there were 1425 lightning strikes (ground and cloud events) recorded within a 50 km radius of Sydney’s CBD, according to Weatherzone.

A Hot Mess for F-Train Subway Riders Trapped in Cars

Screenshot from 2017-06-07 17-12-06.png

The videos have a dramatic, B-horror-movie appearance: Fingers poked between the closed subway doors, as people stuck in the F train car tried to claw the doors apart. On a steamed-up window, a passenger scrawled the words, “I Will Survive.”

On Monday evening, passengers were stranded without power between the West 4th Street and Broadway-Lafayette Street stations, a 45-minute ordeal in which the cars became overheated, causing some riders to panic and one woman to strip nearly naked as they waited in the dark to be rescued, passengers said.

“It felt like a greenhouse. It felt like we were going to suffocate,” said Michael Sciaraffo, 36, an analyst for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. He was on his way home to Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, when the train slowed to a halt and suddenly went silent and black. “We were trying to keep cool. We were coming close to the point where people were ready to start flipping out,” he said. “We were teetering toward that.”

Iran parliament: Hostages held, separate blast at Khomeini mausoleum

Multiple attacks have hit the Iranian capital of Tehran, according to state media.

Hostages are being held in the Iranian parliament, where at least three people were injured after an attacker stormed the building, state-run Press TV reports.
In another incident, a woman was arrested after a bomb attack and shooting spree wounded two people at the Ayatollah Khomeini mausoleum south of the city Wednesday, the semi-official Fars news agency reports.
The news agency reported that another attacker is currently surrounded by security officers.
Terrorist attacks in Iran are rare, particularly in the highly-controlled capital where tourist and government sites are tightly policed.
The location of the second attack is extremely symbolic, targeting the mausoleum of the Islamic Republic’s founder and first supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. He led the revolution that overthrew the Shah in 1979 and was Iran’s leader for 10 years.

Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor share Moulin Rouge secrets. Absinthe being passed out at one point

SIXTEEN years after they appeared as doomed lovers Christian and Satine in the Baz Luhrmann musical Moulin Rouge, Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman have reunited to share their memories of making the much-loved film.

And while the Parisian jukebox musical is a whole lot of fun to watch, it sounds like there was even more enjoyment going on behind the scenes

The pair chat all things Moulin Rouge as part of a wider career-spanning chat for Variety— and as Kidman explains, she was nervous about making her first musical from the outset.

“We’d have great parties! Remember those Friday nights?” asked Kidman.

“Not all of them. Don’t remember all of them,” quipped McGregor.

“We had some pretty wild nights. I remember Absinthe being passed out at one point, and me going ‘Is this safe?’ I was so naive,” said Kidman.

“Then going ‘I suppose it is!’ Dancing on the tables …”
