Natalie Joyce, the former partner of Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce, has spoken for the first time since the former deputy prime minister’s affair with his staffer became public.Ms Joyce told Women’s Weekly she had to resist “throwing a brick at the TV” as she watched Mr Joyce’s interview with Channel Seven earlier this month, for which he was reportedly paid $150,000. She questioned whether the money should have been paid into a trust fund for Mr Joyce and staffer Vikki Campion’s son.

Shaun Southern guilty of murder over drug-fuelled death drive on Bussell Highway W.A.

CNN: US shoots down another pro-regime drone in Syria

A US F-15E fighter jet shot down a pro-Syrian regime drone near At Tanf, Syria, on Monday, two US officials told CNN, the third downing of a pro-regime aircraft this month.

The drone was downed just outside the 55 kilometer de-confliction zone, according to the officials.

It was an Iranian-made Shahed 129 and was thought to be armed and in firing range of US troops.

One official said that the drone was shot down because it was “assessed to be a threat.”

The Iranian-made Shahed 129 is the same type that was shot down earlier this month after it dropped a “dud” munition near a patrol being carried out by coalition troops and local forces.

That drone was shot down after it dropped one of several weapons it was carrying near a position where coalition personnel are training and advising partner ground forces in the fight against ISIS.

Trump’s speech on Cuba ‘grotesque’

US President Donald Trump’s speech on Cuba was a ‘grotesque spectacle,’ but the island’s government will continue working towards better relations with the majority of Americans who back detente, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez says.

Trump announced a partial rollback of the normalisation of relations with Cuba on Friday in Miami, the heartland of Cuban exiles, in a theatre named after the leader of the failed US-backed Bay of Pigs invasion of the island in 1961.

‘It was a grotesque spectacle straight from the Cold War,’ Rodriguez said in Vienna on Monday, during a tour of European countries, in a news conference broadcast live in Cuba.

Trump’s speech before an audience that included people Cuba considers terrorists, included dramatic flourishes like a Cuban-American exile playing the US national anthem on his violin.

The US president stopped short of breaking diplomatic relations with Cuba, restored in 2015 after more than five decades of hostility and leaves many recent agreements between the two countries intact.

However, it will tighten restrictions on Americans travelling to the Caribbean island, hurting the booming Cuban tourism industry and clamp down on US business dealings with Cuba’s military.

Better Call Saul season 3 episode 10 ‘Lantern’ finale review: Is that it?

*Better Call Saul season 3 finale spoilers ahead

This episode was crunch time for me. I’ve been trying so hard to like Better Call Saul the past three seasons and, in the first half of this most recent one, the show finally seemed to be hitting its stride. This was followed by a little coasting in the later episodes, but the sub-plots conclusions were still hovering there in the background, charged for a thrilling climax – I was ready for Better Call Saul to come good.

Sadly, the climax never came, and it didn’t. Each of the stories were paid off in ‘Lantern’, but all in pretty much the least interesting way possible.

First up, let’s look at the drug cartel side of things. Mike, arguably the best thing about the show, was weirdly absent in the finale, as we saw Hector Salamanca demand fealty from Nacho’s resistant father. Sensing danger for his beloved papi, Nacho dispensed with his poisoned pill long game and set about straight-up shooting Hector from point blank range. He was interrupted by a meeting between Salamanca’s crew and Gus Fring however, which should have been a major showdown, a pay-off for the tension that has been building around the don’s aggression and unwillingness to compromise all season. It should have had unexpected twists and complex machinations. Instead, Hector simply refused to accept Don Eladio’s decision again and keeled over again. Carted away in an ambulance, Gus and Nacho were left standing there, and we weren’t even treated to a first proper conversation between the two unwitting allies, it simply cut away. A perfunctory and disappointing denouement to the season arc…

Sean Spicer has had enough

White House press secretary Sean Spicer wants to stop giving the daily press briefings that have made him a household name and a favourite target of comedians.

Sources say Mr Spicer is seeking to take on a more strategic role that would give him a limited presence in the briefings.  A senior administration official and three people familiar with the potential changes said Mr Spicer has discussed taking a more senior communications role at the White House.

The three people said he had reached out to possible successors at the podium and as communications director. They spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss internal deliberations before a final decision is made…

Twin Peaks recap: episode seven – welcome back, Agent Cooper!

Good Dale seems to be coming back to us, finally. But will he be able to solve the great fingerprint mystery – and get the truth about the dismembered dog?

Spoiler alert: this blog is for Twin Peaks viewers who have seen episode seven of The Return, showing on Showtime on the US and Sky Atlantic in the UK. Do not read on unless you have watched.

This third season has already offered a nice line in knowing self-reference (“I don’t understand this situation at all,” said Gordon Cole, as he sat perplexed/enchanted as the rest of us in episode four). In episode seven, the show went a step further and offered something like its own recap. It reprised plot. It revisited old friends, and found that some were much the same. Others, however, were not quite as they once were.

’Much as Dougie was tasked to review suspect insurance claims, the Log Lady has advised Hawk to investigate the irregularities in what happened to Agent Cooper. So after a brief interlude in which Jerry Horne reveals himself to be the only person psychically robust enough to be stoned amid the symbolic menace of the local woodland, we move to the Sheriff’s Department, where Hawk and Frank are examining Laura Palmer’s diary fragments – discovered by Hawk in the bathroom door last week. As the pair explain for the benefit of anyone watching without also having seen Fire Walk With Me, whoever it was who came out of the clearing with Annie that night 25 years ago, “the Good Dale is in the Lodge”. Frank then reveals a nicely-woodworked PC monitor when he Skypes with the moral centre of the Twin Peaks community, Doc Hayward.

7 injured after Myrtle Beach shooting, all caught on video

Shooter is among those hurt in the S.C. incident, police said.

At least seven people were injured early Sunday morning in Myrtle Beach after someone began shooting during a crowded street fight, police said.

The chaotic scene was captured and streamed on Facebook Live by a man staying at a nearby hotel.

Bubba Hinson told the Myrtle Beach Sun News that he was in town for a firefighters’ convention when he spotted a large crowd blocking traffic on the street below his room at the Holiday Sands North hotel.

“I thought they were dancing. That’s why I started filming it,” he told the newspaper. “Then, they started fighting. Then, they started shooting.”

Myrtle Beach police said in a statement that, just after midnight Sunday, a fight broke out on Ocean Boulevard, a major thoroughfare in the seaside South Carolina city.

Before officers arrived, a man in the fight pulled out a gun and shot one person, police spokesman Lt. Joey Crosby said.

An armed security guard who was already on the scene witnessed the disturbance and fired at the shooter, Crosby said. The shooter then hijacked a car and fled — but not before firing additional gunshots at people in the crowd, Crosby said.

The suspect was detained later that morning, police said.

Seven people, including the shooter, were taken to a hospital Sunday with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Despite reports of an officer down in the live video, Crosby said no officer was injured.

Shortage of pilots could hinder airlines’ growth

The worldwide commercial aviation industry will need an extra 255,000 pilots by 2027 to sustain its rapid growth and is not moving fast enough to fill the positions, according to a 10-year forecast published by training company CAE Inc (CAE.TO).

More than half of the required pilots have not yet begun training, the report adds, storing up potential problems as the industry braces for an increase in passenger air traffic that is expected to double the size of the commercial air transport industry in the next 20 years.

“Rapid fleet expansion and high pilot retirement rates create a further need to develop 180,000 first officers into new airline captains, more than in any previous decade,” said the report by CAE, which trains pilots for airlines around the world.

“The shortage of pilots is a problem today. There’s demand today, so people need to start building a strategy with us or other professional academies to be able to build that pipeline,” Nick Leontidis, CAE’s Group President for civil aviation training solutions told journalists at the Paris Airshow on Tuesday.

Rival L3 (LLL.N) also operates pilot training academies.

To meet demand, Leontidis said CAE would seek to grow its own training academy business, rather than make acquisitions.

Former Ipswich QLD mayor Paul Pisasale charged with extortion amid CCC investigation

Former Ipswich mayor Paul Pisasale is arrested and charged with extortion amid an investigation by the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC).

Mr Pisasale was arrested by the CCC this afternoon in Ipswich and was taken to the Brisbane police watch house where he was formally charged with extortion and two other offences.

The CCC said the investigation was ongoing.

Prior to being charged, acting Ipswich Mayor Paul Tully said he and his colleagues were shocked by Mr Pisasale’s arrest.

“We had no warning that this could happen, but the city must go on and we’re going to provide positive leadership into the future,” Cr Tully said.

“Our sympathies do go out to Paul’s family who are obviously very concerned at this difficult time.

“I think people will still remember Paul whatever happens as the person who put Ipswich on the map, did a lot of economic development for the city.

In an exclusive new photo from the upcoming season, fans can see what appears to be the first moment the Mother of Dragons catches sight of the Seven Kingdoms since being whisked away as a baby following Robert’s Rebellion. The image shows Dany — along with her small council of Tyrion, Missandei and Varys — being rowed ashore by an Unsullied soldier. Formula 1’s 2018 calendar: China and Singapore Grands Prix in doubt

The Chinese and Singapore Grands Prix are in doubt for 2018 after being listed as provisional on the first release of the official calendar.

Governing body the FIA has published a 21-race schedule, featuring a French Grand Prix for the first time in a decade – at Le Castellet in Provence.

China and Singapore have not yet completed commercial deals on new contracts with the F1 Group.

The season starts in Australia on 25 March, with the British race on 8 July.

The year ends at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina track on 25 November.

Silverstone is at the end of the first ever run of three consecutive races, two weeks after France on 24 June, with Austria on 1 July.

And Germany returns at Hockenheim for the final year of its current biennial deal, having dropped off the schedule in 2017 because of financial problems at the Nurburgring.

The calendar has been shuffled compared to this year’s schedule to make room for the French event in early summer.

The Azerbaijan race, taking place this weekend, will next year be held on 29 April, the date occupied this year by Russia, which in 2018 will be on 30 September.

Ardmona crash: Bus and taxi collide in fatal accident in VIC. 12 injured

A SMASH between a bus and taxi in regional Victoria has left one woman is dead and 12 people injured.

The minibus and a taxi crashed in the town of Ardmona, near Shepparton, in the state’s north. The incident occurred on the corner of Pyke and Turnbull roads.

It’s understood the taxi T-boned the minibus carrying 12 passengers about 3.30pm on Tuesday.

The minibus, which the woman who died was in, then rolled over, ABC is reporting.

Barclay Bank bosses face criminal charges over Qatar deals by the Serious Fraud Office

The bank and its chief executive in 2008 face Serious Fraud Office charges relating to its crisis-era deals with Qatar.

Barclays and four former senior executives are facing criminal charges relating to the bank’s emergency fundraising at the height of the financial crisis.

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) capped a five-year investigation by announcing Barclays had been charged with conspiracy to commit fraud and the provision of unlawful financial assistance.

It said: “The charges relate to Barclays Plc’s capital raising arrangements with Qatar Holding LLC and Challenger Universal Ltd, which took place in June and October 2008, and a $3bn loan facility made available to the State of Qatar acting through the Ministry of Economy and Finance in November 2008.”

In addition to the allegations it was levelling against the bank, the SFO charged its-then chief executive John Varley and another senior executive at the time, Roger Jenkins, with conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation over the capital raisings.

They are also facing a charge of unlawful financial assistance.
