Record rainfall and 40,000 without power as storm batters WA coast

A houseboat sinking off the coast of Mandurah.MORE than 40,000 properties are without power in southern WA after damaging winds and heavy rainfall battered the coast.

A severe weather warning is in place for a second day for parts of the Pilbara and Gascoyne districts, extending to the lower South West region, due to a rain band and a separate strong cold front.

The State’s electricity utility Western Power says restoring power to customers from Kalbarri to Albany, including Perth, may be slow as bad weather hampers the clean-up process.

State Emergency Service crews have responded to 65 calls for help since Monday.

In Mandurah a houseboat was witnessed sinking at the Dawesville foreshore reserve about 9.30am this morning.

It was reported Water Police attempted to reach the vessel and a smaller yellow boat, but left about 10am as conditions became too dangerous.

#Perth ‘dine-and-dash’, Lois Clover Loder, also linked to PayPass fraud offences. Faces jail if she is convicted of any of the dozens of charges

A woman in an all-black outfit pulls a suitcase along a corridor.A magistrate has warned one half of Perth’s so-called “dine-and-dash” couple she faces jail if she is convicted of any of the dozens of charges against her, describing her as a “prolific offender”.

Lois Clover Loder was arrested in April after a restaurant in Henley Brook posted allegations on social media that she and a male companion dined and then left without paying the bill.

Ms Loder was also charged with not paying for fuel at a Glendalough service station and using false credit card details to buy alcohol and book a hotel room.

Today she appeared again in the Perth Magistrates Court where it was revealed she is also facing charges of PayPass fraud.

Her lawyer suggested that if Ms Loder was convicted of those charges, she was likely to receive fines because they involved amounts under $100.

Every mayor in America thanked Sadiq Khan for leadership. Trump is still attacking him

khan-mayors.jpgWhile Donald Trump relaunched his attack on Sadiq Khan, every mayor in America sent a message of support and solidarity.

Mr Khan has frequently been a foil for criticism from the US President, and Mr Trump began tweeting about him just hours after the attack in London that left seven dead. Even though Mr Khan has roundly condemned the attack and said there was no reason for people to be alarmed by the sight of armed police officers, Mr Trump had said: “At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is ‘no reason to be alarmed!’”

On Monday morning, Mr Trump published a new tweet, that said: “Pathetic excuse by London Mayor Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his “no reason to be alarmed” statement. MSM is working hard to sell it.”

Horsey McHorseface hits big time again: Cessnock winner; Joao Moreira wins in wild run

IT’S official: the Australian racehorse who earned worldwide acclaim, Horsey McHorseface, is finally a winner.

Trained by Bjorn Baker, the three-year-old with the most unusual of names broke through for his first win at just his fourth start when successful at Cessnock in country NSW on Monday.

The name Horsey McHorseface came about in a reference to Boaty McBoatface, the leading choice in a UK public poll last year to name a British research vessel.

Such was the interest in the name that the three-year-old featured on CNN last year after the media giant had earlier covered the story of the poll involving the $350 million polar research vessel.

For the record, Irish jockey Keagan and Horsey McHorseface surged late to easily win the Lathan Arthur Thompson Memorial Maiden.

Why ‘Over the Rainbow’ was the perfect closer for Ariana Grande’s Manchester tribute

“It represents everyone’s wondering why things can’t be a little better,” Judy Garland once said of the enduring song.

She began to sing “Over the Rainbow,” an optimistic coda for a tribute concert to the 22 killed and more than 55 injured by a terrorist attack at her May 22 show in Manchester. Halfway through, her voice faltered with emotion.

The concertgoers, so recently touched by tragedy, remained mostly silent as they waved their lit phone screens in the night sky, just as people held lighters 20 years earlier. Several audience members cried as Grande’s voice soared with lyrics that have stood for hope for some eight decades.

Someday I’ll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops

The song was first written for the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz,” and sung by Judy Garland’s Dorothy before visiting the enchanted land of Oz…

Fears for fifth Aussie in London attacks

There are heightened fears for a young Brisbane woman who may be a fifth Australian injured in the weekend’s London terror attacks.

Family and friends of Sara Zelenak have taken to social media to appeal for information about the missing 21-year-old who hasn’t been heard from since witnessing the London Bridge attack on Saturday night.

Her family had hoped Ms Zelenak may have been one of two unnamed Australians caught up in the dramas but Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Monday afternoon said the government had been in touch with those families.

A Facebook post written by a friend, and shared numerous times, says Ms Zelenak was last seen on London Bridge and witnessed the attacks before getting separated from her friends.

“Her phone has rang with no reply and now the battery must have gone,” read the original post, which has since been deleted.

“She is Australian aged 21 with long blonde hair. She calls her mum daily. It’s been over 24 hours with no news from the consulate. We was hoping the 3rd Australian reported would be her, but it’s not.

“She is based in London. Please share with as many people as possible especially if you have friends down south. Thank you for your help.”

The frantic appeal came as the Queensland families of two other Australians – Brisbane’s Candice Hedge and Darwin electrician Andrew Morrison – breathed major sighs of relief after they were stabbed.

Ms Hedge, 34, working as a waitress in the Borough Markets area, underwent emergency surgery but is expected to make a full recovery after her attackers missed her windpipe or arteries.

“She can’t think how she got so lucky because she thought she was going to die,” Ms Hedge’s grandfather Brian, who lives in Queensland’s Darling Downs, told AAP.

Mr Hedge spoke to his granddaughter, who has been living in the UK for just over a year, after ringing her in hospital on Monday morning.

“She told me she’s going well. She said ‘grandad you know I’m a Hedge and I’m a fighter, I’ll get over this,” he said…

He said he believed a brawl was breaking out when “all of a sudden a guy comes up with a knife … stabs me there (motioning to his neck) I push him off and blood is going everywhere”…

Restrictions cause chaos for Qatar flights

SCHEDULES for Qatar Airways, which operates a daily flight to Perth from Doha, are expected to be thrown into disarray by the closing of air corridors by its Middle East neighbours.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt closed their air and sea borders with Qatar and gave its citizens 14 days to leave, over its alleged links to terrorism in the region.

The Saudi Press Agency said: “The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has taken this decision as a result of the serious and systematic violations committed by the authorities in Doha over the past years with the aim of creating strife among Saudi internal ranks, undermining its sovereignty and embracing various terrorist and sectarian groups aimed at destabilizing the region.”

The UAE, Bahrain and Egypt have all announced full support for the Saudi stance with similar actions.

Flights to Australia and Asia are expected to be severely disrupted as they fly over the UAE and will now require lengthy diversions over Iran which will make some unviable, while others will lose passenger capacity.

Also, many Qatar Airways flights to other middle east countries operate through Saudi air space and this will be denied.

The extent of the impact of the decision is not yet clear and comment is being sought from Qatar Airways.

Etihad, the Abu Dhabi-based carrier, said it would suspend flights to Qatar “until further notice.” Emirates, the Dubai-based carrier, announced it too would suspend Qatar flights starting Tuesday.

Pint-clutching man becomes London symbol

A man pictured calmly taking his pint of beer with him as other people fled past him during the deadly attack in London has been cast as an unlikely hero who encapsulates British humour and defiance.

Dressed in a red T-shirt and sauntering casually with a friend, the drinker stood out in Sky News footage of men and women running down Borough High Street, away from the London Bridge scene of the attack that left seven people dead and 48 injured on Saturday night.

The image spread like wildfire across Twitter and British newspapers said the man, whose identity is unknown, was a symbol of defiance.

‘True symbol of the British spirit as man flees terrorist attack clutching his pint,’ said student Henry Slesser on Twitter.

Others joked that it was only right that he should take his beer with him, given London’s notoriously high prices.

‘Evacuate? Well, OK. But this beer cost six pounds ($10) a pint. I’m taking it with me,’ said another Twitter user, Andrew Brooks.
