World’s oldest Sumatran orangutan, Puan, dies in captivity at #Perth Zoo at the age of 62
The world’s oldest Sumatran orangutan, a prolific mother who is estimated to have given birth to 10 per cent of the global population of the species in captivity, has died at the age of 62.
Puan was put down at Perth Zoo after developing age-related complications.Sumatran orangutans, found in the northern parts of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, do not usually live beyond 50 in the wild.According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature they are critically endangered animals, and their habitat is under threat from wholesale land clearing for forestry and agriculture, including palm oil production.Puan was the matriarch of the Perth Zoo orangutan colony, mothering 11 children during its time in captivity.The long-living primate had a total of 54 descendants worldwide, with 29 still alive today.Its descendants currently make up nearly 10 per cent of the total population of the species in zoos around the world.

Latest WikiLeaks Show The CIA Has Been Hacking WiFi Routers For Years
Leaked documents from the CIA’s elite Engineering Development Group suggest the agency has been helping itself to wireless internet routers as part of Company operations going back years.
On Friday, ZDNet reported that documents released by WikiLeaks show how the CIA has been remotely tapping into routers in private homes and businesses with a variety of tools so as to gain access to those computer networks. Included in the “dozens of files” released by WikiLeaks are installation guides, manuals, and maps that indicate the CIA’s use of various tools for monitoring and analyzing their targets’ online activities, among other things.
According to ZDNet, which reviewed but could not authenticate the documents, the CIA had successfully created software ‘implants’ capable of gaining control in “roughly 25 different devices” from 10 manufacturers, including the popular router brands Netgear, Linksys, Belkin, D-Link, and Asus. As the tech news site pointed out, routers have been a frequent and desirable target for freelance or intelligence community hackers because they offer access to an entire network, and have historically come equipped with various security flaws.

Geri Halliwell Angels in Chains video: George Michael tribute single
She proved this with a memorable appearance on a British cooking show over the weekend, hijacking the program to such an extent she offered the hapless presenter a tongue-in-cheek on-air apologyfor running circles around him and ‘ruining’ the show.
She may now be a 44-year-old married mother of two, but the same Geri who rocked up unannounced at the final audition for the Spice Girls in 1994 and blagged her way into the group is still present.
Last time I spoke to her, four years ago, was on the eve of her last single release, the Australian-only career blip Half of Me. Back then, she spent most of our allotted interview time enthusiastically singing portions of the song down the phone to me.
Four years on, nothing has changed: Geri is about to launch a new single, Angels in Chains, into the world. Once again, prepared questions go out the window as Halliwell / Horner (she married F1 principal Christian in 2015) sings a line-by-line breakdown of her latest musical effort.
In her only Australian interview for the single’s release, she explains that the song is an ode to departed friend George Michael, a man with whom Geri shared a unique relationship.
“I believe in times of trouble and difficult times, we find out two things: What we’re made of, and who our friends are. My relationship with George started out as a fan, but every time I had a little bit of difficulty he stepped up for me. When I left the Spice Girls, I went to live with him. I stayed for a long time [laughs]. Also when I had my first child, I went to live with him. He was really sweet and kind to me,” she says…

IS threat in Southeast Asia raises alarm in Washington
Southeast Asia’s jihadis who fought by the hundreds for the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria now have a different battle closer to home in the southern Philippines. It’s a scenario raising significant alarm in Washington.
The recent assault by IS-aligned fighters on the Philippine city of Marawi has left more than 300 people dead, exposing the shortcomings of local security forces and the extremist group’s spreading reach in a region where counterterrorism gains are coming undone.
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told Congress last week a long-running U.S. military operation to help Philippine forces contain extremist fighters was canceled prematurely three years ago. Small numbers of U.S. special forces remain in an “advise and assist” role, and the U.S. is providing aerial surveillance to help the Philippines retake Marawi, an inland city of more than 200,000 people.
But lawmakers, including from President Donald Trump’s Republican Party, want a bigger U.S. role, short of boots on the ground. They fear the area is becoming a new hub for Islamist fighters from Southeast Asia and beyond.

Dog meat fed to unsuspecting Bali tourists
The group claims, in reports to be aired on the ABC, that some animals are poisoned and that could be a risk to humans who consume the meat.
Other animals are shot in the street and their bodies are butchered in the open.
Animals Australia claims undercover investigators shot footage which shows the dog meat being sold as “chicken” satay to unsuspecting tourists on the beach.
In one exchange, recorded by the group, an investigator spoke to someone selling dog meat in Seminyak.

Seller: Dog satay.
Animals Australia: This is why you have a picture of a dog here?
Seller: Yeah, yeah.
However, when the man sells the food to Australian tourists, he misrepresents the type of meat…

There is something strange going on at Woomera
Jason Wright, 46, was at Lake Hart with his partner Ariane Montminy-Roberge, 33, when the incident occurred on Saturday.
“We were just on our way to Adelaide and we stopped by Lake Hart to use our drone to get some footage,” he said. “It was weird, the drone seems like it was forced down about a minute before the explosion. I had no control over it.”
Mr Wright, who served four years in the army, said there were no planes nearby so it must have been a land-based weapon that caused the “huge orange fireball”.
“It must have been 30-40km from us because it took some time for the (sound of the) explosion to get to us,” he said.
“That was a huge explosion, with a mushroom cloud.”
The Defence Department released a notification last month that there would be exclusions from June 11 to July 14 for weapons testing.
“For safety and security reasons, designated zones within the WPA will be closed and permit holders, existing users and the public may be required to evacuate the area,” it said.
The exclusion area extends to the west of Coober Pedy and affects the Tallaringa Conservation Park.
Pastoralists, aboriginal people and people operating mines were required to evacuate the zone.
The Defence Department did not respond to questions about the explosion, or the strange behaviour of the drone…

Twin Peaks 2017 episode 7 review: Old faces start to take centre stage
*WARNING: SPOILERS FOR TWIN PEAKS SEASON 3 EPISODE 7*
Set aside a two-minute scene of a man sweeping to ‘Green Onions’ (mesmerising in its own way), and the latest Twin Peaks proved surprisingly coherent. If last week’s installment was a pause for contemplation – a moment for us to truly readjust ourselves within David Lynch’s vision of his show as now lensed through 2017 – than this week was the engine starting up to plough forward into the narrative with a renewed determination.
For once, it was the citizens of Twin Peaks themselves who started to drift towards the centre stage. Hawk’s investigation into Dale Cooper’s whereabouts found its breakthrough in the missing pages he uncovered in episode 6, now confirmed to ripped from Laura Palmer’s diary.
Specifically, these documents detail an incident we saw play out in Fire Walk With Me, in which Laura saw a vision of Annie telling her that “the good Dale is in the Lodge, and he can’t leave”…

Finsbury Park: One dead and eight hurt in van attack, which is being investigated by counter-terror police
A 48-year-old man was arrested following the collision near Finsbury Park Mosque in Seven Sisters Road.
Officers were called at 00.20 BST and remain at the scene, the Metropolitan Police said.
The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said a van “intentionally” ran over worshippers.
The body said it was a “violent manifestation of Islamophbia” and called for extra security around mosques…

Perth on track for warmest June ever while WA farmers suffer
While the weekend sunshine lured crowds to Perth’s beaches and playgrounds, WA’s long dry spell is causing havoc for grain growers.
Weather Bureau duty forecaster Ricus Lombard said Perth was on track for its warmest June on record after averaging 23C for the first two weeks of winter.
The city has received just 26mm of rain this month, well below the June average of 172mm…

Australian police find Nazi machine-gun in traffic stop
Officers searched a car on the Central Coast of New South Wales on Sunday night and found an MP40 sub-machine gun plus 60 rounds of ammunition.
The weapon was developed in Nazi Germany – more than a million were produced during the war.
A 40-year-old man, who was a passenger in the car, was charged with possessing a prohibited firearm.
Police said he was refused bail and would appear at Wyong Local Court on Monday.
A forensic examination will be carried out on the firearm to determine whether can be linked to any shooting incidents.
The gun was missing its barrel but police said initial examinations suggested it was in working order…

Storm levels homes in Bellevue Neb.
Drone video captured the massive path of destruction in Hyda Hills. Wicked storms pummeled the neighborhood, nearly leveling Despines’ home.
“It’s devastating because it’s your whole life, it’s everything you have, it’s all the things that make you comfortable, make you want to come home from work at night,” Despines said.
Despines, her daughter, and her 1-year-old grandson were grocery shopping when the storm rolled through. They had debated whether or not to leave the baby home with Susan’s husband.
“If we’d have left him, they’d have been in the living room, and that’s where the roof is right now,” she said.
Her husband was in the shower when the storm hit.
“[He] laid down in the shower, grabbed his ankles and just prayed he was going to make it through,” she said.
Wind whipped through the Bellevue neighborhood, collapsing houses, snapping trees, even overturning moving trucks. Richard Bryant watched the storm came through.
“[It] sounded like a freight train. We could hear the wind blowing around the house. The sliding glass door was shaking, vibrating. We thought it was going to blow in and we were standing in the hallway when the glass from the office blew into the house. That’s the last thing we heard before we ran to the basement,” Bryant said.

Three attackers escaped van – London’s Finsbury Park Mosque. “They were white extremists”: WITNESS
London police say the incident has caused “a number of casualties”.
Eye witness Zakriya James, 24, said he believed there were four attackers in what appears to have been a rented white delivery van. Three got away.
The local said the van “ploughed” into people as they exited the mosque.
“The van just came through as people were walking towards where it was coming from,” he said.
“They didn’t realise what was going on at first. People just started running.
“As far as I know there were four white males and three got away.
“It probably is a retaliation. People were coming out of their prayer. That says something.”
Reports suggest up to 10 people have been hurt near a mosque at Finsbury Park just after midnight (9am AEST).
Up to 100 hundred people are gathered outside the cordoned off zone which is blocking the mosque, with tensions high after the incident.
A group of men huddled together to condemn the “terror attack” outside the mosque, where people had been engaging in Ramadan.
“This is a terror attack!” a man shouted.
One person has been arrested.
There is a massive police response on the scene with riot vans, armed personnel and a helicopter.
A man, who asked not to be named, said his uncle had been hit by the van.
“I have not heard from him but my friend told me he’d been hurt,” he told News Corp.
“The van just drove up and hit them out of nowhere.
“They didn’t see it coming.
“They knew there would be people there.
“They were white extremists.”

The van reportedly veered off the road into people outside the mosque but it was unclear whether the collision was deliberate. One person has been reportedly arrested at the scene.
