Amazon to Australia: ‘destroy’ retail with low prices, fast delivery and GROCERIES

Electronic giant Amazon has announced its move to Australia and will take on major retailers with its low prices on electronics, clothing and even groceries.

The American company is seeking out a 93,000sq metre warehouse in either Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne and will start adding to its 1,000 employees already in the country.

The move is set to impact major retailers, including JB HI-FI, Harvey Norman and Myer, with Amazon dubbed the ‘Country Killer’ by top analysts, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

The retail giant reportedly told Watermark Funds Investment chief investment officer Justin Braitling: ‘We are going to destroy the retail environment in Australia.’

The electronic giant is also expected to sell groceries at its Australian stores through Amazon Fresh, which could take on Coles, Woolworths and Aldi.

Amazon announced the move in a statement on Thursday, saying its ‘next step is to bring a retail offering to Australia, and are making those plans now’.
