Sydney airport is back up and running after a number of flights were delayed or cancelled due to wild weather on Friday night, with more heavy rain expected to lash the city as it hosts Mardi Gras this weekend.
Qantas confirmed six of its flights were cancelled on Friday evening while Jetstar advised it would reach out to customers affected by its cancelled flights.
The cancellations were on the eve of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival, with some inter-state visitors venting concern that they will not be able to make it to the event.
A severe weather warning was issued for Sydney, Illawarra, South Coast, as well as the Snowy Mountains district, with the Hunter and Central and Southern Tablelands also expected to be impacted.
Heavy rainfall across the region was expected with possible flash flooding.
Conditions to ease for Mardi Gras Parade
“We’re expecting from about midnight [tonight] until dawn is when we’ll see the heaviest rainfall,” Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Katarina Kovacevic said.
