100 home-grown terrorists fighting overseas are ‘free to return to Australia’ – after challenges to tough laws

More than 100 Australian terrorists fighting overseas for ISIS could return home at any point because of several flaws in new counter-terrorism laws.

The security laws, which were introduced by Immigration Minister Peter Dutton in 2015, were created to strip terrorists with dual-nationality of their Australian citizenship.

But this week, The Herald Sun revealed Mr Dutton was asked to submit amendments to the laws designed to stop terrorists – including those fighting in Syria and Iraq – from returning to Australia. One of the flaws is officials must show the suspected terrorist is also a citizen of another country, which require the help of officials in Syria and Iraq – who have refused.
