The major TV events this week are the return of Broadchurch for its much-anticipated third and final series, and the equally anticipated Prime Suspect 1973.
This is the prequel to Prime Suspect, detailing Jane Tennison’s early days in the police force, before she became Helen Mirren. (Did she just wake up one day as Helen Mirren? If so, might there be hope for me?)
Both shows were dispiriting in their way, as both reacquainted us with our old crime-drama friend, sexual violence against women, although it could, of course, have been our other old friend, the abduction/murder of children.
