Carwoola fire: Roadblock prevented parents from quickly reaching their home and family

A Carwoola man says authorities left with him with no option but to run towards an out-of-control bushfire last month, to save his home and family.

Key points:

  • Parents were stopped at a roadblock while racing home during bushfire
  • Father says he was forced to make a break for it on foot across the fire ground
  • NSW Police defend decision and say safety was the priority

Glenn and his wife Alex, who have asked that their surname not be used, were in Canberra earlier this month when they heard an out-of-control grassfire was burning near their home at Carwoola, east of Queanbeyan.

“On this particular day, of all days, my two-year-old son and father were at home [alone],” Alex said.

Alex and Glenn raced home but were stopped at a roadblock three kilometres from their house.
