#PERTH Women’s gridiron players ditch skimpy uniforms to tackle full-contact league
For many of the players, the Gridiron West Women’s League represents their first real opportunity to take part in the American-born sport.
The new format games will be played with nine-a-side, under International Federation of American Football (IFAF) rules and regulations.
It is not the first time a women’s gridiron league has been launched in Australia.
The Ladies Gridiron League was launched across the country in 2015, mirroring America’s Ladies Gridiron League, in which players wear skimpy outfits…

Turkey quake: TSUNAMI in Bodrum + tremors in Kos + Rhodes. 2 dead, dozens injured
THOUSANDS of Brits are feared to have been caught up in a deadly earthquake off the coasts of Turkey, Rhodes and Kos which has killed at least two and sparked a tsunami.
Shocking pictures show water flooding a hotel in Bodrum, Turkey, as British holidaymakers on nearby Greek islands woke up to find their hotel rooms “shaking” after the 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck last night.
News agencies are reporting that two people have been killed and several more are injured after a bar collapsed on the Greek party island of Kos.
Nobody is believed to have died in Turkey, but Bodrum State Hospital has reportedly been evacuated.
Brits told The Sun they had been evacuated from their hotels, with pictures showing holidaymakers bunking down on sun loungers over fears buildings may be unsafe.
Footage reportedly filmed inside the hospital showed doctors and sick children huddling under desks as the building shakes.
The tremor struck at 1.31am local time around 6.4 miles south of the Turkish resort, and 10 miles east of Kos.
Footage reportedly filmed in the aftermath of the quake in Kos showed roofs caved in by falling debris and pieces of stone strewn across a square.
Eyewitnesses told how sea levels dipped by about a foot before the tsunami struck, followed by mass floods shortly after.
Terrified British holidaymakers in popular Greek resort Rhodes also described waking up to “swaying” buildings.

Thailand general jailed 27 years for human trafficking at mass trial
A former Thai general has been sentenced to 27 years in jail for human trafficking at a landmark trial.
Manas Kongpan is among more than 60 people convicted in Bangkok of trafficking Bangladeshis and Rohingya Muslims, a minority fleeing Myanmar.
Another top former official was sentenced to 75 years in prison. More than 100 defendants were on trial.
Muslim Rohingya have been fleeing Myanmar for years, paying people smugglers to help them escape.
The arrest of the general in June 2015 was seen as part of an effort by Thailand to close down a human smuggling route through the country.
The judge found him guilty of human trafficking and organised transnational crime.
A former head of administration in the southern province of Satun, Ko-Tong (also known as Patjuban Aungkachotephan), received a sentence of 75 years in prison.
Several other defendants were handed jail terms of similar length. Sentences ranged from four to 94 years.

PM announces ‘Home Affairs’ portfolio, modeled on UK Home Office than US Homeland Security
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has announced the creation of a ‘Home Affairs’ portfolio in a major shake-up of Australia’s national security architecture.
The change is part of the most significant reform to national intelligence and domestic security arrangements in more than 40 years, he says.
‘When it comes to our nation’s security, we must stay ahead of the threats against us,’ Mr Turnbull told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.

Body in Port Noarlunga: Jogger discovers remains on Adelaide beach
Investigators are hesitant to give details of the circumstances surrounding her death until the woman’s identity is confirmed; she is still as yet unidentified and it remains police’s first priority.
SES volunteers combed through the sand of Port Noarlunga beach this morning in the hunt for any evidence that might lead investigators to determine an explanation for the woman’s death or he identity. Police say is middle-aged.
According to 7 News Adelaide reporter Andrea Nicolas, police have collected an earring as “possible evidence” from the Port Noarlunga esplanade, “not far from where a woman’s body was found”, she tweeted.

High risk for 2nd tunnel collapse at nuclear waste site
There is a high risk that a second tunnel filled with radioactive waste might collapse at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington state, the U.S. Department of Energy said Friday.
A tunnel partially collapsed on May 9, forcing some 3,000 workers to shelter in place for several hours.
There were no injuries or release of airborne radiation from that accident, the agency said.
The Energy Department said it had completed an evaluation of a second tunnel on the former nuclear weapons production site and determined there is a high potential for the 53-year-old structure to collapse. The agency has an Aug. 1 deadline to develop plans to prevent that.
Hanford is located in south-central Washington state and for decades made plutonium for nuclear weapons. The site is now engaged in cleaning up a massive inventory of nuclear waste.
In a report released Friday, the Energy Department said the two sealed tunnels “do not meet current structural codes and standards.”
“The report finds that Tunnel 2 is identified as presenting a high potential for localized collapse,” it said.
Tunnel 2 was built of metal and concrete in 1964. It is approximately 1,700 feet (510 meters) long and is covered with eight feet (2.5 meters) of soil to prevent radiation from escaping. Inside are 28 flat-bed rail cars containing nuclear waste, including giant storage vessels and other large equipment from plutonium production.
The tunnel was sealed in 1996 and has not been entered since, said Doug Shoop, Hanford manager for the Energy Department.
The ceiling of Tunnel 1, which was built in 1956 and is 360 feet (110 meters) long, partially collapsed in May. That tunnel contains eight rail cars carrying radioactive waste, and it was sealed in 1965.
As a result of the partial collapse of Tunnel 1, Hanford officials have started daily inspections of the two tunnels and installed remote-controlled cameras to monitor them, Shoop said.
They are considering using remote-controlled equipment to go inside the tunnels and assess their condition, Shoop said.
“These tunnels are not safe and have literally been out of sight and out of mind,” said U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., a frequent Hanford critic. “I’m calling for action now in order to protect Hanford workers, the public and the environment from this ongoing threat.”
Shoop said the Energy Department plans to fill the partially collapsed Tunnel 1 with grout by the end of the year, to stabilize the structure until a permanent disposal plan is created.
The new report said the partial collapse of the roof might have been caused by heavy rainfall a few days before, or deterioration of timber supports because of age and exposure to radiation.
The Energy Department believes the risk to employees and the environment from a collapse of Tunnel 2 is minimal, because the eight feet of soil atop the tunnel would sink into it and prevent or minimize radiation from escaping, the agency said.

Google Maps renames Margaret Court Arena after tennis controversy
The mapping service has renamed the stadium “Evonne Goolagong Arena”, after another Australian great, as suggested by Martina Navratilova.
The American player, who is gay herself, lashed out at the 74-year-old church pastor’s “sick and dangerous” comments on gay people in tennis and transgender children.
If you search for Richmond, Victoria in Google Maps the arena comes up as Evonne Goolagong Arena.
But it still shows as Margaret Court Arena if you search for the original name.
The arena was originally called Show Court One when it opened in 1988, but was renamed after Court in 2003 as a tribute to Australia’s most successful female tennis player…

Marrickville Railway Station in lockdown
Police swarmed the station just before 7am this morning following reports of a suspicious package.
The threat prevented trains from stopping at the station for around two hours, throwing commuters into chaos.
Surrounding streets were also cordoned off and traffic diverted as specialist police sought to identify the package.
“A police operation at Marrickville Railway Station on Illawarra Rd commenced and traffic diversions have been put in place,” a NSW Police spokeswoman said.
“Motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area.”
SERVICES have resumed at Marrickville Railway Station after a police operation placed the inner west Sydney station in lockdown this morning.

Australia Troops to Afghanistan SUGGESTION: Send ALL the Government instead
The 30 new military advisers will raise Australia’s total deployment to 300, Defence Minister Marise Payne said.
Earlier this month, US authorities recommended sending at least 3,000 more soldiers to fight the Taliban.
In February, the commander of US troops in Afghanistan said he needed more troops to break a “stalemate”.

The US military fired more than 50 tomahawk missiles at the al-Shayrat military airfield near Homs on Thursday. Officials confirm that no fixed wing aircraft were involved.

SpaceX to send two private citizens to the moon in 2018 [to get away from Trump? lol]
Elon Musk’s SpaceX will launch a crewed mission beyond the moon for two private paying customers in 2018, it has been revealed.
It will be the first time in 45 years humans have been in deep space, said the company, promising its mission will go ‘faster and further’ than any humans before them.
The week-long mission will take place some time in late 2018 and will ‘skim the surface of the moon’ then venture into deep space before returning to Earth, Musk revealed.

SpaceX will launch the private mission on a journey to circumnavigate the moon and return to Earth.
Lift-off will be from Kennedy Space Center’s historic Pad 39A near Cape Canaveral – the same launch pad used by the Apollo program for its lunar missions.
The mission will use one of SpaceX’s Dragon capsules, which will be modified to allow communications in deep space.
The Dragon will be capable of operating autonomously throughout the whole flight, but the passengers will be trained in emergency procedures.
The mission would ‘do a long loop around the moon’ and would take about a week.
Musk says it will ‘skim the surface of the moon, go quite a bit further out into deep space’ and then return to Earth.
The total flight would go about 300,000 to 400,000 miles into space.
