Qantas, Virgin: Kimberley region says airlines are holding regional towns to ransom
AIRLINES are “crippling” WA’s regional towns and cities with blatant gouging on ticket prices, a Government inquiry into high airfares will be told.
Premier Mark McGowan announced the inquiry, to be led by the Economics and Industry Standing Committee, examining regional airfares and their impact on communities, businesses and tourism.
A not-yet-public submission, obtained by The Sunday Times, from the Broome Chamber of Commerce and Industry, slams the airlines and accuses them of holding the Kimberley tourism town to ransom.
“Broome recently experienced an extreme case where there were no seats available on any flight from Broome to Perth for five consecutive days … the cheapest option to fly on Sunday, July 15, being $5861 to fly via Melbourne,” the submission from chamber chief executive Jael Napper said.
“It’s the firm belief of the Broome Chamber that the reason for the unusually high airfares is lack of competition on the route. Qantas and Virgin are in a comfort zone where there is no threat of disruption.

Mexico knock out Confederations Cup hosts Russia
Mexico winger Hirving Lozano took advantage of an awful mix-up in the Russian defense to score an extraordinary goal which gave his side a 2-1 win and knocked the Confederations Cup hosts out of the tournament on Saturday.
Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev completely mis-read the situation after Hector Herrera sent a looping clearance 80 meters downfield from the edge of the Mexican area seven minutes into the second half.
The ball bounced once about 25 meters from the Russian goal and, as Akinfeev and his defense dallied, Lozano bravely nipped in to head the ball over the goalkeeper from the edge of the area to send the CONCACAF champions into the semi-finals.
Russia had raised the hopes of their fans by taking a first-half lead through Alexander Samedov but were quickly pegged back by Nestor Araujo’s equalizer on the half hour.
Russia’s early exit from was another setback for next year’s World Cup hosts who also went out of last year’s European Championship at the group stage, when they failed to win a game and were regarded by many as the worst team in the tournament.
Russia’s afternoon was completed in the 68th minute after Yury Zhirkov was sent off for elbowing and they were only saved further embarrassment by the video assistant referee who disallowed a third Mexican goal for offside.
The video replay was also used in the 17th minute after Russian forward Fedor Smolov went down in the box after he appeared to come into contact with Araujo but the referee ruled against a penalty.
Mexico dominated possession early on but Russia went ahead fortuitously when Samedov beat goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa just inside the far post after Mexico had failed to clear a header and midfielder Aleksandr Erokhin missed the ball as he was trying to shoot…

Isis faces exodus of foreign fighters as its ‘caliphate’ crumbles
Exclusive: Two Britons and one US citizen are among dozens who have surrendered or been caught at Turkish border
Large numbers of foreign fighters and sympathisers are abandoning Islamic State and trying to enter Turkey, with at least two British nationals and a US citizen joining an exodus that is depleting the ranks of the terror group.
Stefan Aristidou, from Enfield in north London, his British wife and Kary Paul Kleman, from Florida, last week surrendered to Turkish border police after more than two years in areas controlled by Isis, sources have confirmed to the Guardian.
Dozens more foreigners have fled in recent weeks, most caught as they tried to cross the frontier, as Isis’s capacity to hold ground in Syria and Iraq collapses. Some – it is not known how many – are thought to have evaded capture and made it across the border into Turkey.
Aristidou, who is believed to be in his mid-20s, surrendered at the Kilis crossing in southern Turkey along with his wife – said to be a British woman of Bangladeshi heritage – and Kleman, 46. The American had arrived at the border with a Syrian wife and two Egyptian women, whose spouses had been killed in Syria or Iraq, Turkish officials said.
Aristidou said he had travelled to Syria to settle rather than fight. The officials said he had admitted to having been based in Raqqa and al-Bab, both of which had been Isis strongholds until al-Bab was recaptured by Turkish-backed Syrian opposition forces earlier this year. He went missing in April 2015 after flying to Larnaca in Cyprus. Neighbours told the Guardian that he had adopted Islamic dress shortly before he disappeared.

John Clarke’s final curtain call as last Clarke and Dawe episode released
The final episode in the decades-long satirical Clarke and Dawe series is released, following the sudden death of John Clarke earlier this month.
The previously unseen sketch was filmed at the ABC in Southbank on April 5, only days before Clarke died while bushwalking in Victoria.
It has been released with the permission of Clarke’s family and his long-time collaborator, Bryan Dawe.
Clarke always wrote two completely different scripts for the program each week, and he and Dawe would film both.
Clarke would then decide which episode would go to air.

Maddow reveals Trump’s tax returns; White House furious
The White House was left fuming Tuesday night as Rachel Maddow revealed that she had obtained Donald Trump’s tax returns.
The White House was left fuming Tuesday night as Rachel Maddow revealed that she had obtained Donald Trump’s tax returns.
In a tweet ahead of her 9pm ET MSNBC show, Maddow tweeted: ‘BREAKING: We’ve got Trump tax returns… (Seriously).’ She later clarified that they were his 2005 returns.
In response, an indignant White House told CNN: ‘You know you are desperate for ratings when you’re prepared to violate the law to push a story about tax returns from over a decade ago.’
It went on to say that Trump paid $38 million on an income of $150 million that year, in addition to sales and exise taxes and employment taxes.
The release concludes that ‘it is totally illegal to steal and publish tax returns,’ and fired off a parting shot about the ‘dishonest media.’
Trump had become the first presidential candidate in years to disclose his tax returns during the run-up to the election.

Oroville Dam Riverbanks COLLAPSE after dam spillway is shut off
State Department of Water Resources officials have said they’re keeping an eye on the Feather River for erosion. Most of the collapsed riverbanks have been reported in Sutter and Yuba counties.
Riverbanks along the Feather River in California have collapsed, after state officials shut off the Oroville Dam’s damaged main spillway.
The river level dropped suddenly, with almond farmer Brad Foster telling the San Francisco Chronicle: ‘The damage is catastrophic.’
He said: ‘When the bank pulled in, it pulled the pumps with it. It busted the steel pipes.’
Water officials announced Monday that they were closing the floodgates at the top of the spillway, stopping the release of water from Lake Oroville and showing that much of the concrete spillway is now gone. It’s been replaced by a deep gash in the earth on both sides.
State Department of Water Resources officials told the Chronicle they’re keeping an eye on the Feather River for erosion. Most of the collapsed riverbanks have been reported in Sutter and Yuba counties, the newspaper said.
