Australian David Eldar crowned new World Scrabble champion
AUSTRALIAN wordsmith David Eldar has been crowned the new world Scrabble champion — thanks to his knowledge of classroom furniture.
Eldar beat his opponent Harshan Lamabadusurilya 3-0 in a best of five final — placing the word “carrels”, a cubicle desk, to score 74 points.
The 27-year-old, originally from Melbourne but now living in London, claimed victory at the Old Museum, Nottingham Conference Centre, on Sunday after competing against players from more than 26 countries and across three rounds of the MSI World Championships…

Trump’s lack of discipline leaves new chief of staff frustrated and dismayed
As the new White House chief of staff, John F. Kelly routes all calls to and from President Trump through the White House switchboard, where he can sign off on them. He stanches the flow of information reaching the president’s desk. And he requires that all staff members — including Trump’s relatives — go through him to reach the president.
But none of those attempts at discipline mattered this week. Instead, Kelly stood to the side as Trump upended his new chief of staff’s carefully scripted plans — pinballing through an impromptu and combative news conference in New York in which he inflamed another self-inflicted controversy by comparing the actions of white supremacist groups at a deadly rally in Charlottesville last weekend with the counterprotesters who came to oppose them.
The uproar — which has consumed not only the White House but the Republican Party — left Kelly deeply frustrated and dismayed just over two weeks into his job, said people familiar with his thinking. The episode also underscored the difficult challenges that even a four-star general faces in instilling a sense of order around Trump, whose first instinct when cornered is to lash out, even self-destructively.
By Wednesday, Trump, back at his New Jersey golf club, was further isolated and the White House was again under attack. Some aides and confidants privately described themselves as sickened and appalled, if not entirely surprised, by Trump’s off-the-cuff comments. And the president watched, furious, as a cascade of chief executives distanced themselves from him, prompting the dissolution of his major business advisory councils…

N Korea UPDATE missile: Satellites spot preparations for launch: ‘WARTIME SITUATION’
Officials have told US media that spy satellites have observed DPRK mobile missile launcher movement, indicating an intermediate-ballistic missile may be being prepared.
The report comes as US Secretary of Defence James Mattis warns any further escalation could rapidly lead to war: “Yes that means for a lot of young troops they’re going to be in a wartime situation.”
‘DELIGHTFUL HISTORIC MOMENT’
Pyongyang’s state media has this morning reported President Kim Jong-un as “praising” his Strategic Force for drawing up a “careful” plan for a “power demonstration” to “envelope” Guam in fire.
“The nuclear force of the DPRK is strong in its guts and no one can guess its muscle as the flight trajectory of medium-to-long ballistic rocket Hwasong-12, firing data and the correct hitting-point are made public at home and abroad.”
Kim said he would “watch a little more” Washington’s behaviour, but he will make an “important” decision if the US continues its “extremely dangerous reckless actions”.
‘WARTIME SITUATION’
Mattis told reporters in Washington this morning the situation could escalate to war “very quickly”.
He said it could be assessed “within moments” if a missile fired from North Korea was on track to hit Guam.
The United States would “take out” any seen to be heading for American soil.

Multicultural group of students makes the semi-finals of WA schools debating competition
A multicultural group of students is surpassing expectations after making the semi-finals of Western Australia’s schools debating competition.
A number of the students joined the team to improve their English skills, never expecting such success.
One of them, Asmaa Hameed, understood only a few words of English when her family moved from Iraq to Perth.
Two years later, she has transformed her basic vocabulary into a set of language skills that has her winning debates.
Asmaa, 13, said she joined the Greenwood College debating team to improve her English…

Egg contamination scandal widens as 15 EU states, Switzerland and Hong Kong affected
Europe’s latest food scandal has widened after the European commission announced that a total of 15 EU states, plus Switzerland and Hong Kong, are now known to have received egg products contaminated by an insecticide harmful to human health.
A spokeswoman in Brussels said the situation was “evolving by the day”, as criminal investigators continued to hold two men arrested on Thursday for fraud following a series of raids in Belgium and the Netherlands.
The EU countries known to be affected by the scandal are Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Sweden, Britain, Austria, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Denmark. Products in British supermarkets were removed on Thursday after it was discovered that the initial Food Standards Agency claim that 21,000 contaminated eggs had hit the UK was a major underestimate. The FSA now says the figure is more like 700,000.
Following the arrests of the two directors of a Dutch firm, Chickfriend, which is believed to have supplied the banned anti-lice agent to farmers, a third man, whose home was raided by investigators, spoke to Dutch media on Friday to insist upon his innocence.

22,000 Festival goers evacuated: Huge fire breaks out on stage at Tomorrowland Unite Spain
Tomorrowland Unite Spain festival in Barcelona has been evacuated after a massive fire engulfed its stage – just hours before Steve Aoki was set to headline the event.
Emergency services said over 22,000 people were forced to flee the one-day festival, held in the city’s Parc de Can Zam de Santa Coloma de Gramanet, after a fire broke out on the left hand side of the main stage.
An eyewitness said on social media the stage “just exploded”.
No injuries have been reported as a result of the blaze, but firefighters are said to fear the stage’s structure could collapse.
Meanwhile, local media reported that festival organisers have vowed to refund the evacuated concert-goers.
Other acts booked to appear at the electronic dance music event, which was set to continue until 3am (2am UK time), included Dutch DJ Afrojack and Swedish DJ Ingrosso.
When the fire broke out, revellers had been enjoying acts livestreamed to the festival from the Tomorrowland Mainstage in Belgium.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established but is being investigated, according to the local authority.

Man dies after a crash between his mobility scooter and a car in Dianella, Perth
A 91-YEAR-OLD man has died after a crash between his mobility scooter and a car in Perth overnight.
About 5.15pm a mobility scooter and a white Mitsubishi Outlander collided at the intersection of Yirrigan Drive and Coralberry Crescent in Dianella.
The mobility scooter rider was taken to Royal Perth Hospital with serious injuries, but later died.
WA Police are asking anyone with information on the crash, or who say the Mitsubishi prior to the incident, to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Katy Perry announces 2018 Australia tour
Perry, who wowed at Glastonbury Festival in a glittery cat suit, was almost unrecognisable when she touched down at Sydney Airport.
Dressed down in a black Adidas tracksuit, 32-year-old Perry kept it casual with dark sunglasses and a black cap which hid her blonde pixie cut.
She posed for selfies with excited fans waiting to greet her.
The pop superstar is own under for a whirlwind promotional tour in which she will perform live on The Voice Australia Grand Finale this Sunday before she is expected to appear on Channel 7’s Sunrise on Monday.
But at a Myer appearance today, she was all glammed up to meet fans and announce she is bringing her world tour to Australian in July and August, 2018…

12yo boy dies, 11yo rescued after falling into grain silo on Dinninup farm WA
A 12-year-old boy has died after falling into a grain silo on a farm in WA’s South West.
Police said the accident happened when the boy and his 11-year-old friend were helping family friends on a farm near Dinninup, 280 kilometres south-east of Perth.
Both children fell into a grain silo as it was being towed across a paddock late on Sunday afternoon.
The 11-year-old boy survived but the older boy died at the scene despite attempts to resuscitate him.
A spokeswoman for WorkSafe said two investigators would travel to the farm from Bunbury tomorrow to investigate the accident.

Surfing world icon Jack O’Neill who pioneered wetsuit dies
Jack O’Neill, a Northern California surfing world icon who pioneered the wetsuit, has died.
O’Neill’s family says he died of natural causes Friday at his Santa Cruz, California home. He was 94.
The eye-patch wearing ocean lover died peacefully, surrounded by family in his oceanfront home of more than 50 years. He began wearing a black eye patch after his surfboard hit his left eye while riding a wave.
O’Neill moved with his wife to San Francisco’s Ocean Beach neighborhood in the early 1950s. Looking to surf longer, he began experimenting with various materials until he invented the first neoprene wetsuit.
He opened a surf shop in San Francisco but in 1959 moved his growing family 75 miles south to Santa Cruz, where he opened his second shop to cater to the city’s growing surf scene…
