White Nationalist Cantwell in Custody for Felony Charges, Police Say

White nationalist Chris Cantwell turned himself in to police to face three felony charges related to violence at the deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va.

Mr. Cantwell—the focus of a widely watched documentary on the rally— was in custody at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail in Lynchburg, pending transport to Charlottesville, according to the University of Virginia Police Department.

Police charged Mr. Cantwell, of Keene, N.H., earlier this week with two counts of illegal use of tear gas and one count of malicious bodily injury by a “caustic substance,” explosive or fire during the evening of Aug. 11, when white nationalists marched on the university’s campus and faced off against counter protesters.

In a Tuesday blog post, Mr. Cantwell said he would willingly turn himself in on charges which he said appeared to stem from “pepper spraying a guy in a brawl at UVA.” He said he had hired a lawyer but wouldn’t identify him, out of safety concern
