Tributes for sports commentator Drew Morphett who has died in Melbourne

TRIBUTES have been pouring in on social media for Drew Morphett, with many remembering him as the voice of their childhood and one of the best sports broadcasters in the industry.

Morphett, who retired at the end of the 2016 AFL season, was found dead in his Melbourne home on Friday night.

He spent more than three decades at the ABC, becoming one of the national broadcaster’s best-known callers with his coverage of cricket, AFL and the Olympic Games.

In between stints at the national broadcaster, Morphett joined Seven Network in 1988 and called AFL games for 13 seasons.

Many footy fans recall him as the host of The Winners in the 1980s, a program that was rebooted in recent years on Fox Sports.

In covering four Olympic Games, Morphett became a specialist broadcaster in cycling, diving and hockey.

His services to broadcasting were recognised in 2014 when he received an Order of Australia Medal.
