Hurricane Harvey strengthens to Category 4 level as it nears Texas coast

Corpus Christi: Hurricane Harvey has intensified and is poised to hit the mainland United States as the most powerful storm in more than a decade, as authorities warn residents to shelter from life-threatening winds and flooding.

Harvey strengthened into a powerful Category 4 storm on Friday as neared the Texan coast, the US National Hurricane Centre said.

Harvey was located about 45 miles (70 km) east of Corpus Christi, Texas, packing maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (215 kph), the NHC said.

Forecasters said the storm would hit land near Corpus Christi, Texas, around 8pm (11am AEST), dropping over three feet of rain in some areas along the central Texas coast, before potentially looping back over the Gulf of Mexico and hitting Houston.
