White Nationalist Cantwell in Custody for Felony Charges, Police Say

White nationalist Chris Cantwell turned himself in to police to face three felony charges related to violence at the deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va.

Mr. Cantwell—the focus of a widely watched documentary on the rally— was in custody at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail in Lynchburg, pending transport to Charlottesville, according to the University of Virginia Police Department.

Police charged Mr. Cantwell, of Keene, N.H., earlier this week with two counts of illegal use of tear gas and one count of malicious bodily injury by a “caustic substance,” explosive or fire during the evening of Aug. 11, when white nationalists marched on the university’s campus and faced off against counter protesters.

In a Tuesday blog post, Mr. Cantwell said he would willingly turn himself in on charges which he said appeared to stem from “pepper spraying a guy in a brawl at UVA.” He said he had hired a lawyer but wouldn’t identify him, out of safety concern

Trump: 1,000 misleading statements since assuming the presidency, five a day: WP

OUTRAGEOUS LIES OF PINOCCHIO-TRUMP - Globalo

The New York Times and The Washington Post have separately tallied Trump’s lies, with The Post calculating that he has now made more than 1,000 misleading statements since assuming the presidency. That’s a grueling pace of almost five a day, and it is accelerating (at the six-month mark, it was 4.6 a day). This prevarication proliferation is an indication that John F. Kelly is unable to rein in Trump, and that the problem was not Steve Bannon but the president himself.

Sigh. If only President Trump denounced neo-Nazis as passionately and sincerely as he castigates journalists.

What could be an easier task than distancing oneself from Nazis or violent white supremacists? Yet Trump manages to make it infinitely complicated — and then get distracted by self-pity and excoriate reporters for committing journalism. The key strain of his sulfurous speech in Phoenix on Tuesday was an extended attack on “dishonest” reporters (including at “the failing New York Times”).

Look, we in journalism deserve to have our feet held to the fire. We make mistakes all the time, and too often we are superficial, sensationalist, unfair, defensive or diverted by shiny objects. Critics are right that we in the national media are often out of touch with working-class America, and distressingly often, we are lap dogs instead of watchdogs.

Yet for all our failings, journalism remains an indispensable constraint on power. Trump has systematically tried to delegitimize the institutions that hold him accountable — courts, prosecutors, investigators, the media — and that’s the context for his vilification of all them, for we collectively provide monitoring that outrages him.

Switzerland landslide: Eight missing in Val Bondasca region

Eight people are missing following a landslide in south-eastern Switzerland, police say.

The landslide on Wednesday forced the evacuation of some villages in the Val Bondasca region, officials said.

German, Austrian and Swiss citizens are among those missing, Graubรผnden cantonal police said in a statement.

Pictures from the scene show rocks and debris scattered across roads. A helicopter is helping in the search and rescue operation, Swiss media report.

The landslide happened at about 09:30 local time (07:30 GMT) on Wednesday when boulders and earth cascaded down the side of the Piz Cengalo mountain, the Engadiner Post newspaper reported.

The village of Bondo was among hamlets in the path of the debris and about 100 people from there were evacuated, it said.

Residents are not allowed to return until further notice, the report added.

Hikers staying in mountain huts were airlifted to safety.

Police said that despite searches eight people were unaccounted for, six of whom had been reported missing by relatives.

Trump rebuked by Republicans after threat to shut down Government over border wall

US President Donald Trump’s fellow Republicans have rebuked him after his threat to shut down the US Government over funding for a border wall rattled markets and cast a shadow over congressional efforts to raise the country’s debt ceiling and pass spending bills.

Key points:

  • Mr Trump has threatened a shutdown if Congress did not agree to fund constructing the wall
  • Congress will have about 12 working days when it returns on September 5 to approve spending measures
  • White House says Mr Trump will work with Congress to fund the wall because he “ran on it, won on it”

“I don’t think anyone’s interested in having a shutdown,” the top Republican in Congress, House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, told reporters on Wednesday in Hillsboro, Oregon, where he visited an Intel factory.

Mr Ryan said building a wall along the country’s border with Mexico to deter illegal immigration was necessary, but added that the government did not have to choose between border security and continuing operations.

In a speech on Tuesday, Mr Trump threatened a shutdown if Congress did not agree to fund constructing the wall, a signature promise of his presidential campaign, which added a new complication to Republicans’ months-long struggle to reach a budget deal.

After Mexico rejected a chief part of Mr Trump’s promise — that it would pay for the wall — the President said the United States would fund it initially and be repaid by its southern neighbour. Lawmakers, including many Republicans, have not made that funding a top priority, as some question the necessity of a wall.

Edible crickets: WA farm gets green light to sell insects for food

A Western Australian start-up company has become the second in Australia to sell crickets for food.

Crickets have long been flagged around the world as the future of food, gaining popularity in countries such as Vietnam, Canada and America, but Australia has been relatively slow to the game.

Up until now just one other edible-cricket farm, based in Sydney, has been in operation.

But now a south-west start-up company, Grubs Up, is also in the game, producing crickets for protein powder and eyeing off bar snacks and condiments down the track.

The business venture has been a long time in the making for founder Paula Pownall, who quit her job in 2015 to focus solely on the research and development of the cricket business.

Ms Pownall said she was excited to finally be able to sell the crickets to consumers.

“It means that we can actually sell that product and really upscale our business and production on a commercial level,” she said.

No space needed

Inside the cricket farm it is hard to believe it could be the future of protein farming.

Thousands of crickets live inside what are essentially re-fitted laundry tubs, stacked on top of each other.

Ms Pownall said the operation was perfect for her as she did not have a large property, so she needed something that she could ‘vertical farm’.

Ex Prime Minister Tony Abbott admits he was drunk during Kevin Rudd’s GFC bailout vote

FORMER Prime Minister Tony Abbott has finally confessed that he was passed out, drunk, on the night he should have voted on Kevin Rudd’s GFC bailout measures in 2009.

Wayne Swan will no doubt be gratified that Mr Abbott has come clean, having dogged him to do so for years after the event.

Mr Abbott, who was the leader of the opposition at that time, has shared his story on The House With Annabel Crabb, in an episode set to air on September 5.

He recounted the story to Crabb standing in the Members Only dining room in Parliament House.

“There was one famous occasion when Peter Costello, Kevin Andrews and I hung out rather a long time here,” he told Crabb…

Trump is deteriorating before our very eyes. ‘Downright scary and disturbing’

downright scary and disturbing

Were you deeply alarmed by President Trump’s performance in Arizona on Tuesday night? If so, that is understandable. Trump is getting worse. He rambled and ranted with abandon. He hinted that he will pardon Joe Arpaio. He escalated his attacks on the media, accusing them of misrepresenting his response to the violence in Charlottesville. Yet he also doubled down on his defense of Confederate monuments, claiming that “they” are trying to “take away our heritage and our history.” (Emphasis added.)

All of this appeared to signal a growing contempt for the rule of law and an increasing indifference to the health of our democracy and institutions, and to his own responsibilities and duty to the public to try to calm the antagonisms unleashed in Charlottesville’s aftermath. If anything, at this difficult moment of national introspection, Trump conspicuously sought to further inflame those antagonisms. Some reacted with deep panic: Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper labeled the speech “downright scary and disturbing,” adding: “I really question his ability to be — his fitness to be — in this office.”

ORGANISED crime costing Australians $36 billion a year, with superannuation accounts identified

ORGANISED crime is estimated to be costing Australians $36 billion a year, with superannuation accounts identified as an emerging and lucrative target for international syndicates.

A report to be released today by the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission says crime gangs are increasingly trying to get their hands on the retirement savings of workers through methods such as identity theft and electronic hacking.

“A recent increase has been observed in the use of targeted online methodologies to fraudulently access an individual’s superannuation account,” the Organised Crime in Australia report states.

“SMSFs (self-managed super funds) are particularly vulnerable to incidents of fraud, in part due to the desire of individuals to source and control their own investments.”

While acknowledging regulators were responding to the new threat, the report found other types of identity crime were rising at an alarming rate…
