Hurricane Harvey strengthens to Category 4 level as it nears Texas coast

Corpus Christi: Hurricane Harvey has intensified and is poised to hit the mainland United States as the most powerful storm in more than a decade, as authorities warn residents to shelter from life-threatening winds and flooding.

Harvey strengthened into a powerful Category 4 storm on Friday as neared the Texan coast, the US National Hurricane Centre said.

Harvey was located about 45 miles (70 km) east of Corpus Christi, Texas, packing maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (215 kph), the NHC said.

Forecasters said the storm would hit land near Corpus Christi, Texas, around 8pm (11am AEST), dropping over three feet of rain in some areas along the central Texas coast, before potentially looping back over the Gulf of Mexico and hitting Houston.

UK Ford £2,000 [$3,500] scrappage scheme for pre-2010 cars for AIR QUALITY

Ford is the latest car company to launch an incentive for UK consumers to trade-in cars over seven years old, by offering £2,000 off a new model.

Unlike schemes by BMW and Mercedes, which are only for diesels, Ford will also accept petrol cars.

All of the part-exchanged vehicles will be scrapped, Ford said, which would have an “immediate positive effect on air quality”.

Old cars, from any manufacturer, can be exchanged until the end of December.

“Ford shares society’s concerns over air quality,” said Andy Barratt, chairman and managing director of Ford of Britain.

“Removing generations of the most polluting vehicles will have the most immediate positive effect on air quality, and this Ford scrappage scheme aims to do just that.”

Waking up

Consumers will be given £2,000 off new Ford models ranging in price from around £12,000 to more than £20,000. Ford said by combining the scrappage incentive with other standard offers, customers could receive up to £4,000 off a car or £7,000 off the cost of a van.

ALIVE OR NOT? Fears for Australian boy caught up in Las Ramblas. Father arrives in Spain

The father of an Australian boy caught up in the recent Spanish terrorist attacks has touched down in Barcelona.

Grave fears are held for Andrew Cadman’s son Julian, who was separated from his mother during the van attack.

There has been no formal word on the condition or whereabouts of the seven-year-old Sydney boy, since the assault on Las Ramblas boulevard on Thursday (local time).

Spanish officials confirmed overnight that all those injured or killed in the attack have been located.

Mr Cadman was met by consular staff at Barcelona Airport and taken immediately to an official justice building, the place where victims of the attacks are being identified.

He then travelled to the hospital where his wife, Jumarie, is being treated for serious injuries.

Jom, as Ms Cadman is known, is doing “really well”, according to information the family has received from the hospital.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said his thoughts were with the family.

“I think we should all in our quiet moments say a prayer for that little boy,” he said.

“All of us as parents know the anguish his father and his whole family is going through.”

Sydney Swans pip Adelaide Crows by three points in AFL thriller

Lance Franklin kicked three goals as Sydney edged out competition leaders Adelaide by just three points to confirm its status as the in-form team of the AFL.

Star forward Franklin was a dominant force, with the Swans prevailing 13.5 (83) to 11.14 (80) in a Friday night thriller at Adelaide Oval.

Franklin and teammate Josh Kennedy (31 disposals, one goal) inspired the Swans’ 11th win in 12 matches – they are now fourth, though Richmond is favoured to steal that spot back by beating Fremantle on Sunday.

The Swans also have a worry with Zak Jones reported for a late bump on Adelaide’s Brad Crouch in the final quarter.

The Crows remain top and assured of an initial home final but were jumped at the start, with the Swans kicking the first four goals – two from Franklin, matched against Adelaide’s fifth-gamer Alex Keath.

Egypt train crash kills 37, injures more than 120 outside coastal city of Alexandria

Two passenger trains have collided in Egypt’s coastal city of Alexandria, killing 37 people and injuring 123, a health ministry spokesman said.

Key points:

  • A train traveling to Alexandria from Cairo crashed into the back of another train, the Egyptian Railways Authority said
  • Public prosecutor Nabil Sadek ordered an urgent investigation into the crash
  • A health ministry spokesman said 75 ambulances had been deployed at the crash scene

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ordered authorities to establish who was responsible for the crash, which left bodies strewn on the ground around wrecked carriages.

A statement by the Egyptian Railways Authority said a train traveling to Alexandria from Cairo, Egypt’s capital, crashed into the back of another train, which was waiting at a small station in the district of Khorshid, just east of Alexandria.

The stationary train had just arrived from Port Said, a Mediterranean city on the northern tip of the Suez Canal, when it was hit, according to the statement.

State newspaper al-Ahram said earlier that 36 bodies had been taken to hospital morgues in Alexandria province.

As rescue teams pulled dead and injured from the damaged rail wagons, public prosecutor Nabil Sadek ordered an urgent investigation.

Blizzards hammer Victoria’s slopes, with more strong winds expected

Victoria’s alpine areas are being pummelled by blizzard conditions with heavy snowfalls setting in, as a powerful cold front makes its way across the state.

The front began battering the south-west yesterday evening and peaked in Melbourne in the early hours of this morning, with some bayside suburbs hit by gusts of up to 80 kilometres per hour.

The Grampians in the state’s west recorded the strongest winds of 102 kilometres per hour.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said alpine areas could receive their heaviest falls of the winter so far.

“We may see wind gusts up to about 110 kilometres per hour. Probably easing a little through the afternoon but still quite windy,” he said.

“We will just see steady snow up there with expected totals of between 20 and 40 centimetres.”

Small plane crashes on Utah highway, killing 4 on board

Authorities say a small plane crashed on a northern Utah highway, killing four people aboard, snarling traffic and leaving behind blackened wreckage.

No injuries were reported on the ground Wednesday.

The Utah Department of Public Safety confirmed the deaths north of Salt Lake City but didn’t immediately release further information on the victims or the cause of the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the plane took off from a nearby municipal airport and crashed about a half-mile away.

The crash closed most lanes of Interstate 15 in Riverdale, about 35 miles north of Salt Lake City.

Truck driver Obdulio Ruiz tells the Standard-Examiner newspaper in the city of Ogden that it appeared the pilot was trying to land the plane on the interstate just before the crash.

Cardinal George Pell spotted in Singapore en route to Australia

Cardinal George Pell has been filmed by a member of the public on a stopover in Singapore, apparently on his way back to Australia.

Pell is due to face court in Melbourne later this month on historical sexual assault charges.

Victoria Police have alleged the charges involve multiple complainants.

A member of the public filmed a casually dressed Pell sitting outside an ice-cream shop before asking if he was innocent.

“I just called my mother and she wants to know if you are innocent,” the bystander asks.

Pell replied: “Tell her that I am.”

The senior Catholic figure has maintained his innocence and said he is looking forward to returning to Australia to clear his name.

Deadly earthquake hits Philippines

At least one person has been killed by a strong earthquake that struck the central Philippines.

A strong earthquake has struck the central Philippines killing at least one person and damaging several houses and some infrastructure.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said aftershocks are expected but ruled out any tsunami following the earthquake of magnitude 6.5 that rocked the towns of Jaro and Kananga in Leyte province.

Congresswoman Lucy Torres-Gomez from the province said one person had been confirmed killed and Kananga had been ‘badly hit’.

‘There were cracks on the roads and in some areas landslides have been reported,’ she told ANC News Channel, adding that a building also collapsed.

‘The aftershocks are still quite strong.’
