A government spokesman says hundreds of rescuers using motorboats saved 789 people, including some pregnant women, from being swept away by the swirling floods in six districts in Gujarat state.

Mount Abu, a popular hill station in the desert Rajasthan state, received 80cm of rain on Monday, surpassing a 1992 record of 66cm, according to the state flood relief department.

At least 60 people have died in northeastern Assam state due to flooding since the start of the monsoon season, which runs from June to September.
