Residents to leave Caloundra suburb as fast-moving fire burns along Bruce Highway QLD
Residents of a Sunshine Coast suburb are told to leave the area immediately due to a fast-moving, uncontrolled bushfire.
The fire is at Roy’s Road on the eastern side of the Bruce Highway, south of the Caloundra interchange.
At 5pm, Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) said the fire was expected to impact the suburbs of Aura and Meridian Plains in the next two hours.
“Residents are advised to evacuate, moving in an easterly direction away from the fire at the last east exit at Aura,” a statement read.
“This fire is moving quickly and is currently uncontrolled.”
Police have declared an emergency situation under the Public Safety Preservation Act.
Many residents and businesses in the Aura estate have self-evacuated to family and friends, while police also are contacting residents.
An evacuation centre has been set up at Lake Kawana Community Centre at Bokarina.
The fire is burning on the southern side of Caloundra Road.
QFES said spot fires were likely to start up to 4km ahead of the fire front, and embers also were being thrown from the fire.
“The fire is expected to impact on the Aura and Meridian Plains community and some property may be lost,” the QFES advised.

Charlottesville: Suspect charged with murder after car hits protesters at ‘Nazi’ rally
Police charge a 20-year-old man with second-degree murder after a gathering of white nationalists in Virginia took a deadly turn when a car ploughed into a group of counter-protesters.
The Charlottesville Police Department said in a statement that James Alex Fields Jr, from Ohio, also faced three counts of malicious wounding, and one count related to leaving the scene.
A 32-year-old woman was killed when Fields allegedly drove his car into a crowd of anti-racist protesters during unrest in the college town, around two hours’ drive south-west of Washington DC. Other demonstrators were left fighting for their lives…

Monsoon rain lashes India, killing 16
Heavy monsoon rain has lashed western India, killing at least 16 people this week, with more than 24,000 villagers fleeing to higher ground.
A government spokesman says hundreds of rescuers using motorboats saved 789 people, including some pregnant women, from being swept away by the swirling floods in six districts in Gujarat state.
Mount Abu, a popular hill station in the desert Rajasthan state, received 80cm of rain on Monday, surpassing a 1992 record of 66cm, according to the state flood relief department.
At least 60 people have died in northeastern Assam state due to flooding since the start of the monsoon season, which runs from June to September.

Truck slams into Armadale house – significantly damaged
A HOUSE has been “significantly damaged” in Perth’s south-east after a truck rolled down a hill and smashed into the property.
Emergency crews were called out to the home on Burnside Road in Mount Richon around 3pm on Monday.
According to a Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson, the unmanned truck rolled down a hill, went through a fence and crashed into the home.
It’s believed the truck’s handbrake failed with the driver not inside at the time.
It remains unclear if anyone was inside the Mount Richon home. Luckily no one was injured in the crash.
SES volunteers have been called to the home, while power and gas has been cut to the home as emergency crews work at the scene.
The rescue helicopter has also been sent to the scene of a separate crash south of Armadale.
According to police, a vehicle rolled on the Albany Highway just after 3pm with up to four people inside.
Emergency crews are on their way to the scene.

The hot new trend in food is garbage – literally making products from food waste
There’s been an explosion in the number of start-ups
Flour milled from discarded coffee fruit. Chips made from juice pulp. Vodka distilled from strawberries that nobody seems to want.
At one point not so long ago, such waste-based products were novelties for so-called ethical shoppers. But in the past three years, there’s been an explosion in the number of start-ups making products from food waste, according to a new industry census by the US non-profit coalition ReFED.
The report, which was released on Tuesday and tracks a number of trends across the food-waste diversion industry, found that only 11 such companies existed in 2011. By 2013, that number had doubled, and ReFED now logs 64 established companies selling ugly-fruit jam, stale-bread beer, and other “upcycled” food products.
The companies have diverted hundreds of tonnes of food waste from landfills, a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. They’ve also become a model for larger, multinational food companies, which are starting to realise that upcycling peels and piths can be good business.
That sort of mainstream change could make a big dent in the food-waste problem, ReFED estimates. In a 2016 report, the coalition calculated that “upcycling” efforts could save 92,500 tonnes of food from landfills each year.
