Tarneit childcare centre crash leaves man dead after attempted police intercept

A man has died after crashing his car into a childcare centre while trying to flee police in Melbourne’s outer west, officers say.

Police from a specialist squad tried to pull the car over on Tarneit Road in Tarneit about 4:00am, police said.

As they turned on their lights, they saw a “flash” inside the vehicle, they said. However, they have not said what they believe caused the flash.

The car is believed to have crossed a median strip and crashed into the reception area of the childcare building, causing it to catch fire.

The driver managed to flee a short distance from the blaze.

Police said officers tried to rescue the man, but were driven back by the flames.

Emergency crews put out the fire, but the driver died at the scene.
