Baton-wielding riot police have detained hundreds of demonstrators across Russia as a court sentenced protest organiser and opposition figure Alexei Navalny to his second prison term this year.

Mr Navalny, a strong critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, called the protests, which drew thousands of people and were some of the biggest in Russia since 2012.
The demonstrators, who included many young people, chanted “Russia without Putin” and “Russia will be free”.
