Perth Mint considers issuing ‘bra ban’ for female staff

Female employees at Perth Mint could soon be forced to forego underwire bras for non-wired versions as the manufacturing facility calls to ban all clothing containing metal.

As part of the proposal all zips, metal buttons and clasps would also be banned.

According to reports a recent review found there was a need for metal-free clothing for staff and contractors entering high-security zones. It is understood visitors won’t be affected.

The review highlighted a number of safety issues, including a case where a staff member reportedly stole a $50,000 gold bar.

However, the union representing Perth Mint workers isn’t impressed.

Steve McCartney, secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, labelled the proposal “disgraceful” and said Perth Mint needs to find another way to approach the concern, that doesn’t discriminate against women.
