The strangeness of ‘Twin Peaks: The Return’ makes it the perfect show for 2017

This post discusses the episodes of “Twin Peaks: The Return” that have aired so far. If you can explain the plot to me in a coherent fashion, go ahead.

“Twin Peaks” was among the most notable of the shows I missed in a largely TV-less childhood, and though I’ve since watched David Lynch and Mark Frost’s series, it hadn’t sunk deep hooks in me the way it did for so many others. So I was pleasantly surprised to find myself mesmerized and provoked by “Twin Peaks: The Return,” the revitalization airing of the show now airing on Showtime. For me, “Twin Peaks: The Return” has resonated beautifully with my sense of unsettledness. The series is a wonderful illustration that the right piece of art for a particular moment isn’t necessarily the one that mirrors that moment most exactly.

It’s instructive to look at the difference between “Twin Peaks: The Return,” and “House of Cards,” and how each works in the current moment.
