UK weather: Eve of spring brings snow and -8C temperatures

Most parts of the UK faced an ice warning today as the Met Office warned motorists to take extra care on untreated roads and forecast showers falling as rain, sleet and hail – and even snow in hilly areas.

Snow fell this morning around the Greater Manchester and Peak District areas with up to several centimetres (1.6in) forecast by the Met Office over hills overnight, causing difficult driving conditions for many motorists.

Forecasters issued an alert of ice this morning for most of the UK with the frosty and sub-zero conditions expected to be widespread for at least the next few nights. Today’s overnight low was -8C (18F) at Kinbrace in the Highlands.
