Broadchurch fans have praised former Coronation Street star Julie Hesmondhalgh’s emotional portrayal of a rape victim as the ITV drama returned for its final series.

Hesmondhalgh, who plays Trish Winterman, was seen meeting DS Ellie Miller and DI Alec Hardy outside a police station as she arrived to report the attack.

And her character wiped away silent tears after DS Miller took a mouth swab inside the station, setting the tone for an understated but powerful performance.
