Huge fire in recycling plant sends toxic fumes across Melbourne – as residents are warned to shut their windows and switch off air conditioners

A major factory fire at a recycling plant is sending plumes of toxic smoke across across north Melbourne on Tuesday morning.

The firefighting efforts have had a significant impact on fire spread and smoke has begun to dissipate,’ an MFB statement said.

Efforts to control the blaze were hampered because of the type of dense recycling materials processed at the plant, while an explosion also forced fire crews to evacuate.
