Catholic Church Threatens To Dismiss Staff Who Marry Same-Sex Partners
Australia’s Catholic Church is ramping up its opposition to gay marriage, threatening to dismiss staff who marry their same-sex partner if it becomes legal.
In an exclusive Fairfax report, the archbishop of Melbourne, Denis Hart, says the church expects teachers, nurses and other employees to hold the Catholic faith and beliefs on marriage.
Archbishop Timothy Costelloe — the chairman of the Bishops Commission for Catholic Education — also cautioned teachers against undermining their schools’ values if marriage laws are changed…

Flight DELAYS, road warnings as fog covers Melbourne
Flight delays and diversions are expected for domestic and some international flights at Melbourne airport as a thick fog blankets the city.
One plane has already been diverted and passengers can expect delays because of the pea souper, an Airservices Australia spokeswoman said.
The weather on Wednesday morning forced a Qantas international flight to divert to Sydney.
“Some international planes can usually navigate through fog, it all depends on the type of equipment the plane is equipped with,” the spokeswoman told AAP.
Passengers are being urged to check with their airline, particularly if they are travelling on a domestic flight.
The fog has VicRoads warning drivers to take care on roads, slow down and use their low-beam lights or fog lights if visibility is poor.

It is believed the family elected to switch off her life support at Princess Margaret Hospital this afternoon.
In a statement to media, her parents thanked those who tried to save their daughter.

#Bodycam shows police shot dog as it approached him with tail wagging
Newly released body camera video shows a Minneapolis police officer shooting a homeowner’s dog as the dog walked toward the officer, tail wagging, before the officer shot a second dog who was rushing toward him.
The video released Thursday was a new view of a July 8 incident in which the homeowner questioned why the officer — who was responding to a security alarm — shot her dogs. The homeowner, Jennifer LeMay, earlier posted surveillance video from her own security camera that she said showed the dogs were not a threat.
Both dogs survived but need extensive care. The actions of the officer, Michael Mays, are being investigated by the department.
LeMay’s attorney, Mike Padden, obtained the body-camera video and released it. He questioned Mays’ initial account that the dogs “charged” at the officer.
It shows Mays entering the backyard and a dog — Ciroc — running toward him, tail wagging. The dog stops as Mays backs away, then walks toward the officer, tail still wagging, before Mays fires. The second dog, Rocko, then runs at Mays and is shot.
Mays is heard saying, “I dispatched both of them.” He also apologizes to LeMay’s daughter.
“Hey, I’m gonna sit there and say sorry about this,” Mays says. “I don’t like shooting no dogs. I love dogs, so … it’s unfortunate. Are they A-OK?”
Chief Janee Harteau earlier promised to launch mandatory training for officers in handling dog encounters. She also said the department would help with veterinary bills for LeMay’s dogs.

Are we sleepwalking to World War III?
A former Defence Force chief says in our lifetimes, our economy will be devastated, our land seized, our system of government upended.
Australia is plunging headlong into catastrophe and we are utterly unprepared. In fact, we may be past the time when we can prepare.
The time-bomb is ticking and it will explode in our lifetimes.
All certainty will be lost, our economy will be devastated, our land seized, our system of government upended.
This isn’t mere idle speculation or the rantings of a doomsday cult, this is the warning from a man who has made it his life’s work to prepare for just this scenario.
Admiral Chris Barrie was chief of Australia’s Defence Force between 1998 and 2002.
He has seen war and sent troops into battle.
Now, he says we are sleepwalking towards a conflict that will alter the world as we know it.
Australia, he says, will be invaded. He fears for the country his grandchildren will inherit.
Admiral Barrie delivered his warning to me over a Korean barbeque meal in Western Sydney.
I was interviewing him for The Link to get his assessment of the North Korean nuclear threat, but his fears expand far beyond the hermit kingdom.
Over kimchi and slices of beef, Admiral Barrie guided me through our region’s many tripwires.
A miscalculation or misunderstanding, he said, could tip us over the edge, countries would be backed into corners and we have no way right now of talking our way out.
This is a warning that comes from our past, and if unheeded, will shatter our future.
“History doesn’t repeat but it does rhyme.”
That quote is often attributed to the great American writer Mark Twain, but its sentiment speaks to us through the ages.
History can appear as inevitable even as we fail to see it.
The French diplomat and political scientist, Alexis de Tocqueville, said of the French Revolution:
“Never was any such event, stemming from factors so far back in the past, so inevitable and yet so completely unseen.”
In a new century, simmering tensions and geo-strategic alliances would tip the world into all-out war.
Historian Christopher Clarke’s book Sleepwalkers reveals how the assassination of Habsburg heir, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, on June 28 1914 in Sarajevo triggered a domino effect that pitted the reining global power Britain against the rising Germany.
The world thought it couldn’t happen — Germany and Britain were each other’s single biggest trading partners; the royal families were blood relatives — yet it did.
How? Clark says political leaders become hostage to events.
“Causes trawled from the length and breadth of Europe’s pre-war decades are piled like weights on the scale until it tilts from probability to inevitability,” he wrote.
Admiral Chris Barrie says he has been reading Clark’s book and thinking how events then mirror events no…

#F1 Sauber-Honda deal has burst,’ a BILD report says. ‘Honda is dissatisfied…
‘The Sauber-Honda deal has burst,’ a BILD report says. ‘Honda is dissatisfied with the personnel changes of the Swiss team. The contract for a three-year intensive cooperation was negotiated by Monisha Kaltenborn. The Honda bosses had high hopes in the Austrian who saved Sauber from the brink, but Sauber and Kaltenborn separated almost four weeks ago. ‘This means that Sauber is currently without a motor for the coming year – and above all without the factory support that the Japanese wanted to grant to the Swiss team. The most likely solution is to remain as a customer at Ferrari.’
