Judge shot, wounded near Ohio courthouse; suspect killed
Jefferson County Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr. was shot near the courthouse in Steubenville, just across the Ohio River from West Virginia’s northern panhandle, roughly 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of Pittsburgh.
Steubenville City Manager James Mavromatis tells WTOV-TV that Bruzzese was talking after being wounded. He was flown to a Pittsburgh-area hospital.
Investigators didn’t immediately release further information about the judge’s condition or the suspect.
Local media reported that the suspect’s body could be seen lying next to a car at the drive-thru of a neighboring bank. Police said a man who was in the car with the suspected shooter was taken into custody.
The courthouse was closed for the day as local and state authorities helped to secure the scene. Jefferson County Commissioner Thomas Graham told WTOV that some courthouse workers witnessed the “tragic situation” and that people would need time to process what had happened.
The 65-year-old Bruzzese hears general and domestic relations cases as one of two judges serving in Jefferson County Common Pleas Court.
Bruzzese has served on that court since 1997, according to Ohio Supreme Court records. He was most recently re-elected in 2014 for another six-year term.

Lebanon helped Australia foil plane terror plot
Nohad Machnouk told Saudi-owned television station Al-Arabiya Al-Hadath that the bomber was Lebanese and had planned to blow up a plane bound for Abu Dhabi.
In July four Australian men were arrested during raids to disrupt what authorities described as an Islamic State-inspired plot to bomb an Etihad Airways flight.
Two have since been charged with terrorist related offences.
Australian authorities have said they thwarted a credible terrorist plot to down a plane by smuggling a device onboard.
They have provided few details, including the precise nature of the threat or any airlines involved.
Machnouk said two other brothers are held in Australia while the fourth is a senior member of the Islamic State group based in the northern Syrian city of Raqqa.

Formula One launches eSports world championship
LONDON (Reuters) – Formula One will crown its first virtual world champion at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after announcing on Monday the launch of an eSports series to run from September to November.
The new eSports Series is a partnership with Formula One, game developer Codemasters and events and competitions specialists Gfinity.
The series will be in three stages, starting with qualification events through September to determine the 40 quickest virtual drivers, and run on PlayStation4, Xbox One and Windows PC platforms.
Live semi-finals will be held at London’s Gfinity Arena on Oct. 10-11 with the top 20 going on to the three-race finals at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit on Nov. 24-25.
The first eSports Series world champion will automatically qualify for the following year’s semi-finals.
Formula One managing director Sean Bratches said in a statement that the new series represented “an amazing opportunity for our business: strategically and in the way we engage fans.”
U.S.-based Liberty Media, who took over Formula One in January, have targeted gaming as a growth area to drive revenues and connect with younger audiences.
Some of Formula One’s participants are already embracing the world of eSports, with McLaren executive director Zak Brown saying all teams could eventually have their own virtual counterpart.

Mum ‘cut in half’ + decapitated by hospital lift after giving birth
Rocio Cortes Nunez was being transported on a stretcher to another floor of Our Lady of Valme Hospital in Seville, southern Spain, when she became trapped in the elevator.
She had just given birth by C-section and was on her way to a maternity ward to recover and spend time with her newborn on Sunday, according to a report by El Correro.
Her baby escaped unhurt, the newspaper said.
She had two other girls, aged four and five-years-old, according to local media, which reported the 25-year-old had been decapitated in the horrific tragedy.
It is thought the lift began moving upwards before the stretcher was fully in, following a suspected mechanical failure.

Albany teen dies from meningococcal disease
Mr Dunham was in Tasmania helping his sister Lucy move for a new job when he fell ill.
Lucy told Seven News the 19-year-old had been in Tasmania for a week and was due to return home to WA on Saturday.
But on his way to the airport, Lloyd had trouble breathing and passed out.
The 19-year-old never regained consciousness and died on Saturday.
Mr Dunham’s sister Lucy Dunham said the family appreciate the wonderful things that have been shared on social media and are grateful for the support they have been shown…

Remember Volkswagen’s microbus? Automaker introducing an all-electric version
The German automaker plans to begin production of a new, all-electric version of the its famous van.
The extremely groovy vehicle, called the ID Buzz, won’t arrive in dealerships until 2022, VW said.
The van will be part of Volkswagen’s planned ID line of electric vehicles. The first, a compact car simply called the ID, was unveiled as a concept car at the Paris Motor Show last September. The ID Buzz concept van was unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show in January.
The name Buzz plays off the word “Bus,” VW said. ID stands for any number of things including “Idea,” “Identity” or “Intelligent Design.”
The electric compact car will go on sale before the van does, VW said.

Marseille: At least one person has died after a car crashed into people
At least one person has died in Marseille after a car crashed into people waiting at two different bus stops in the southern French port, police sources told AFP.
The source added that the suspected driver had been arrested afterwards.
Another person was left seriously injured.
The police sources, who asked not to be identified, did not say whether the incident was being treated as a terror attack or an accident

Moonee Ponds bomb scare over after robot searches bus, area declared safe
An area around Kellaway Avenue and Mount Alexander Road at Moonee Ponds, not far from the main shopping precinct, was closed to the public for much of the afternoon.
Police had closed Mount Alexander Rd in both directions, causing heavy traffic.
A bomb squad robot was sent into the area and onto a bus parked along Kellaway Ave, near the Moonee Valley Council headquarters, local library, police station and popular Queens Park.
A police spokeswoman said police had now declared the area safe.
A council office on Kellaway Ave was closed as police investigated but staff were not evacuated, a spokeswoman said.
The Metropolitan Fire Brigade was also on scene…
N Korea warns Australia over joint military exercises with the US and South Korea
Thousands of US and South Korean military personnel are beginning an annual military exercise, which will include Australian involvement in computer-simulated drills.
In a statement dated two days ago, North Korea’s official news agency said the Australian Government should be focused on maintaining the peace of its own country, instead of joining the US in moves towards nuclear war.
It has described Australia’s move as suicidal, inviting disaster and “an illustration of political immaturity unaware of the seriousness of the current situation”.
“Australia followed the US to the Korean War, the Vietnamese War and the ‘war on terrorism’, but heavy loss of lives and assets were all that it got in return,” a translation of the editorial reads.
“Countries like Australia that join the military adventure against the DPRK, blindly following the US, will never avoid the counter-measures of justice by the DPRK.”

It is hard to believe just over two weeks ago Kyrgios was forced to retire hurt down 6-3, 3-0 to world No105 Tennys Sandgren due to a shoulder injury in Washington DC.
Kyrgios went down to seventh seed Dimitrov 6-3, 7-5 on Sunday, unable to maintain the form which saw him beat Nadal in the quarter-finals. But he heads to Flushing Meadows after wins over former world No.3 David Ferrer in the final four and world No13 David Goffin, Alexandr Dolgopolov and Ivo Karlovic in the early rounds.
“Looking back from where I was … I would have never thought I would have had my first Masters 1000 event final,” Kyrgios said. “So I’m pretty happy with the result. From where I was to here, it’s just been amazing.
“First round was really a struggle and obviously got through a tough one with Dolgopolov. Gradually, I just feel back to where I should feel on a tennis court. I wasn’t enjoying it at all, didn’t want to be out there. External things were affecting how I was feeling. It really didn’t make sense. Right now, I lost today but I feel great. I feel great where I’m at right now.”
