Renowned anti-poaching leader murdered by gunmen in Tanzania
NAIROBI — A leading wildlife conservationist who pioneered new techniques to catch elephant poachers and ivory smugglers was shot and killed in Tanzania on Wednesday.
Wayne Lotter, a 51-year-old South African, was in a taxi in Dar es Salaam when it was stopped by another vehicle. Two men opened the car door and one shot him.
Lotter had for years received threats against his life, according to his organization, the PAMS Foundation, which he founded in 2009. He worked closely with the Tanzanian government during a period in which poaching surged. From 2009 to 2014, the elephant population in Tanzania collapsed from 109,051 to 43,330, according to government data.
Lotter’s killing is being investigated by Tanzanian authorities. It remains unclear whether his death is related to his anti-poaching work. Reuters reported that his laptop was stolen in the attack.
“Through his work with PAMS he helped train thousands of village game scouts in every corner of the country. His ground-breaking work in developing an intelligence-based approach to anti-poaching helped successfully reverse the rampant rates of poaching facing Tanzania,” the organization posted on its Facebook page.

Finland: Several people stabbed in Turku, police say
The public has been asked to move away from the city center, Turku police tweeted.
Turku is in Finland’s southwest and lies around 140 kilometers (around 85 miles) west of the capital, Helsinki. It is a Swedish speaking city.

Twin Peaks actor arrested on attempted murder charges
An actor who recently appeared in the cult TV show Twin Peaks has been accused of trying to murder his girlfriend with a bat.
Jeremy Lindholm was arrested on Wednesday night on attempted second degree murder charges, after a violent attack involving a baseball bat.
The Spokane Police Department responded to a call of a man assaulting a woman with a bat at a local business in Spokane, Washington.
The 41-year-old actor was captured on camera fleeing the scene with the weapon in hand, before being arrested and taken into custody.
“There was information suggesting the intent of Lindholm was to kill the victim,” the police’s news release said.
According to court documents obtained by local news station KREM, Lindholm told police he had been arguing with his girlfriend of five years before she headed out to buy him a drink.

#F1 Honda 2018: Not supplying Toro Rosso with engines after talks broke down
Toro Rosso were believed to be keen on taking a Honda power unit next season, despite having a Renault contract, while the Japanese firm wanted to add another team to their roster.
But while talks had been progressing prior to the summer break, they have now collapsed – according to Autosport. It is claimed that there were differences over financial aspects, while time was running out to come to an agreement.
And it could have big ramifications for McLaren who, were they to leave engine partners Honda next season, would only have Renault as a likely option for 2018 with Ferrari and Mercedes not willing to help the Woking team.
But Renault only want to supply three teams, and Toro Rosso’s stay would effectively close that door. (Full story – external link)

Fed gov snubs WA water for Murray-Darling
The Turnbull government has rejected WA’s request for $39.7 million towards irrigating the Southern Forest region and $140 million on solving the devastating long-term salinity problem at WA’s second largest water reservoir.
Prior to the prime minister’s visit earlier this month, the McGowan government pledged to contribute $56 million in state funding, plus $10 million in private funds from farmers in Pemberton and Manjimup, to generate an extra 12 gigalitres of sustainable irrigation water a year.
The larger Myalup-Wellington project was a joint industry scheme to clean up contamination in Wellington Dam and divert catchment to a desalination plant, potentially increasing irrigated agriculture from 6557 hectares to 34,600 hectares.
“WA has received almost nothing from federal water initiatives,” Ms MacTiernan said.
“Overwhelmingly, money is poured into the Murray-Darling at the expense of WA.”
The agriculture minister said her government believed it could double the value of the states horticultural output and create 1500 regional jobs but without federal funding would fail to meet its goal.

Barcelona terrorist attack: 7yo AUSSIE BOY missing in Barcelona
Julian Cadman is missing while his mother Jom is in a serious but stable condition in hospital after a white van ploughed into crowds on Las Ramblas.
Julian’s aunt Hayley has posted a desperate appeal online to help find her nephew.
“My nephew Julian Cadman is missing. Please like and share. We have found Jom and she is serious but stable in hospital,” she said.
“Julian is 7 years old and was out with Jom and they were separated. Please share if you have family or friends in Barcelona.”
Another friend Megan Cameron posted online: “You never know who it may reach over there and anything we can do to help in the effort to locate him and reunite him with his Mum in hospital”.
She said that Andrew was flying to Barcelona tonight to be with his wife and to help find Julian.
The family of Julian Alessandro Cadman have put a call-out on Facebook in the hope of tracking the seven-year-old boy down.
He was in Barcelona with his mother Jom Cadman, when they got separated.

Residents to leave Caloundra suburb as fast-moving fire burns along Bruce Highway QLD
The fire is at Roy’s Road on the eastern side of the Bruce Highway, south of the Caloundra interchange.
At 5pm, Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) said the fire was expected to impact the suburbs of Aura and Meridian Plains in the next two hours.
“Residents are advised to evacuate, moving in an easterly direction away from the fire at the last east exit at Aura,” a statement read.
“This fire is moving quickly and is currently uncontrolled.”
Police have declared an emergency situation under the Public Safety Preservation Act.
Many residents and businesses in the Aura estate have self-evacuated to family and friends, while police also are contacting residents.
An evacuation centre has been set up at Lake Kawana Community Centre at Bokarina.
The fire is burning on the southern side of Caloundra Road.
QFES said spot fires were likely to start up to 4km ahead of the fire front, and embers also were being thrown from the fire.
“The fire is expected to impact on the Aura and Meridian Plains community and some property may be lost,” the QFES advised.
Cops swoop on man after Silent Witness star was attacked with scissors outside Euston Station
THIS is the moment cops swooped on the suspected scissor-wielding attacker of Silent Witness TV star Liz Carr.
While holding a pair of scissors in each hand, the man allegedly lunged at wheelchair user Liz, 45, in London as her carer attempted to defend the actress.
The dramatic video shows three police officers apprehending a man on Euston Street in central London, with the suspect pushed up against the side of the building.
Onlookers can be seen stopping and watching the arrest as police officers carry out their job, with a pair of scissors visible on the floor.
Liz, who plays scientist Clarissa Mullery, is now said to be recovering from a slash wound.

Eight Australians caught up in Barcelona attack: Bishop
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said of the eight Australians affected by the terrorist attack in Las Ramblas, four have been injured, three have required consular support and one is unaccounted for.
“Of the four injured, that includes one woman, who is from New South Wales in a stable condition, but was seriously injured,” Ms Bishop told reporters Friday afternoon.
“A second woman, also from NSW, is in a serious condition in hospital. She was travelling on a British passport.”
She also said two young men from Victoria were injured, but have been discharged from hospital after treatment.
“I have spoken to the Spanish ambassador to Australia and conveyed to him the condolence of the Australian Government and the Australian people and reaffirmed our commitment to stand with Spain at this terrible time.”
She said travel advice has been updated, and that travellers should take caution.
“Again, I remind Australians that if you are worried about loved ones or families, please try and get in touch with them directly, but if you are unable to do so, and you are calling from Australia, the number is 1300 555 135.”

I’m writing to you in a personal capacity, as a concerned citizen and a father. It has not been my habit to widely offer running commentary on current affairs, nor to presume to weigh in on the events of a given day save those that might be of particular or specific concern to 21CF and my colleagues. But what we watched this last week in Charlottesville and the reaction to it by the President of the United States concern all of us as Americans and free people.
These events remind us all why vigilance against hate and bigotry is an eternal obligation — a necessary discipline for the preservation of our way of life and our ideals. The presence of hate in our society was appallingly laid bare as we watched swastikas brandished on the streets of Charlottesville and acts of brutal terrorism and violence perpetrated by a racist mob. I can’t even believe I have to write this: standing up to Nazis is essential; there are no good Nazis. Or Klansmen, or terrorists. Democrats, Republicans, and others must all agree on this, and it compromises nothing for them to do so.
Diverse storytellers, and stories, can make a difference, and that diversity, around the world, is a crucial strength and an animating force in my business. Often times not everyone agrees with the stories and positions that emerge from this, and that can be difficult. Certainly no company can be perfect. But I’m proud of the powerful art that can emerge, and I’m grateful to all of my colleagues who make this happen. From the potent and compelling narrative of “12 Years a Slave”, to the streets of Pakistan and the bravery of an extraordinary young woman that we saw in “He Named Me Malala”, to name just a few, we’ve never been afraid to help storytellers and artists say important things – hard things, too.

Trump lawyer forwards email praising Robert E. Lee as a ‘great man’
Amid the fallout from President Trump‘s comments that “both sides” are to blame for the weekend’s violence in Charlottesville, his personal lawyer John Dowd forwarded an email to friends and associates casting Confederate army commander Robert E. Lee as a “great man” and saying that the Black Lives Matter movement has been “totally infiltrated by terrorist groups.”
The email, first reported by the New York Times, was not written by Dowd — but contained arguments promoting pro-Confederate propaganda. The email was sent to Dowd shortly after the president’s contentious press conference on Tuesday. Dowd later forwarded the email.
“The following information and argument President Trump should put forth concerning Charlottesville and General Robert E. Lee,” wrote Jerome Almon, the author of the email.
Almon, who has promoted a number of conspiracy theories online and claims to have predicted several terrorist attacks, told ABC News in a phone interview that he is glad to see the information in the email he sent to Dowd “is getting out” and argued that Black Lives Matter is “just as racist as the KKK.”
Almon, who is black, said his email was not meant to be sympathetic of the Confederacy but to make the case that Lee saved the country by surrendering at the war’s end rather than resorting to guerrilla tactics.
“Instead, [Lee] ordered the commander to tell his troops to go home, plant crops, and rebuild,” Almon said in the email he sent to Dowd, adding that “the protesters need to heed General Lee’s advice and go back to the ghettos and do raise their children.”
Almon’s email praises Lee’s actions ending the Civil War but doesn’t go into the divisive issue of slavery.
“You cannot be against General Lee and be for General Washington, there literally is no difference between the two men,” Almon writes in the email, equating the actions taken by the nation’s first president in leading the Revolutionary War to the actions of Lee.
A source familiar with Dowd’s actions says the lawyer was simply forwarding on an email and was not espousing the ideas that it contained. The source said that Dowd is now receiving “hate calls” and that the frenzy created over the email demonstrates how the political discourse has gone “off the rails.”
Almon describes himself as supportive of Trump’s policies and said that the president was correct on Tuesday when he said there was blame on both sides for the violence in Charlottesville.

Barcelona: SECOND attack just hours after 13 massacred. 5 terrorists killed and ‘7 people injured’
SEVEN people are injured and five terrorists have been killed in a second terror attack in Spain – just hours after 13 people were mowed down in Barcelona.
The bloodshed erupted in the early hours of this morning in the resort town of Cambrils, located 70 miles south of the earlier attack.
Cops tweeted: “We are working on the theory that the terrorists killed in Cambrils were related to the attacks in Barcelona and Alcanar.”
Spanish media report that five suspects – feared to be wearing “explosive belts” – have been killed in Cambrils.
Six civilians were injured – two seriously – and a police officer was also hurt.
Bomb disposal officers are working to determine whether the alleged terrorists were wearing explosive vests. They are carrying out controlled explosions in Cambrils and told locals not to be alarmed via Twitter…
