#Perth set to hit 28C by Friday. Warm Weather on the way

Spring is finally here with some much-missed sunshine on the way.While the sun certainly had its hat on in Perth on Monday with blue skies and temperatures reaching nearly 18 degrees… it’s about to get a whole lot warmer.

As it stands the Bureau of Meteorology has forecast highs of 26 degrees for Thursday, while Friday is tipped to hit 28 degrees.If it does inch towards the 30-degree mark it will be the hottest day in Perth since May 7 and represent a much warmer start to spring compare to last year.In September 2016, only four days registered above 20 degrees.

And with the highest temperature for the whole of that month just 23.1 degrees, we’re on course to surpass that three times in one week – with Wednesday tipped to be 24 degrees.It has some way to go to match the record maximum temperature for a September day in Perth, which was 34.5 degrees in 2014.

North Korea missile: Kim Jong-un preparing launch, South Korea says

SOUTH Korean media has caused a frenzy after releasing information claiming Seoul’s military believes North Korea is readying the launch of a ballistic missile, possibly an ICBM.An ICBM, known as an intercontinental ballistic missile, is a guided ballistic missile popular with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

No further details have been released but the news comes at an already tense time for North Korea’s neighbours.

Lionel Richie reschedules Australian tour

The dancing on the ceiling has been postponed until next year as Lionel Richie has changed his Australian tour dates.The veteran singer was set to come Down Under with Nile Rodgers and his 1970s disco group Chic from September 30 but has postponed his dates until March.

Richie was due to start his US tour in February but pushed that back until July to recover from a knee procedure. The changes to his international schedule have had a knock-on effect for his Australian tour dates.However, Richie has added a date in Canberra to the tour.Tickets which have already been sold remain valid for the rescheduled shows and ticketholders will be contacted by Ticketek with full details.

Ticketholders for the Brisbane show at the Entertainment Centre have not been given another date but have been asked to stand by for a new show announcement during the week of September 18.

Rap star Lil Wayne suffers seizures, is hospitalized: reports

Grammy-winning rap star Lil Wayne was taken to hospital on Sunday after suffering a seizure and being found unconscious in his Chicago hotel room, TMZ said on its web site.Lil Wayne, 34, who has become one of the biggest names in rap music over a two-decade career, suffered a second seizure at the hospital, TMZ added, and his representative confirmed to the site that he had suffered multiple seizures.

Reuters could not reach representatives of the rapper to confirm the report.The incident comes more than a year after the rap star, whose Grammy wins include the best rap album award in 2008 for “Tha Carter III,” was treated after suffering what his representatives called two minor seizures.

Four years ago Lil Wayne, whose given name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr, spent several days at a Los Angeles hospital, after which he told radio station Power 106 he was epileptic and prone to seizures.

Burning Man: Man Dies After Rushing Into Flames

A man rushed past layers of security officers into a massive fire at the Burning Man festival’s signature ceremony, suffering burns that left him dead just hours later.

Authorities are investigating the death of Aaron Joel Mitchell, 41, who broke through a two-layer security perimeter during the Man Burn event in which a giant, wooden effigy is set ablaze.Nevada’s Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen estimated that there was a crowd of about 50,000 people who were present when the festival’s crew of firefighters pulled Mitchell out of the blaze.

He was airlifted to the UC Davis hospital burn center in California, where he died Sunday morning. The sheriff said doctors confirmed Mitchell wasn’t under the influence of alcohol, but a toxicology report is pending.”We don’t know if it was intentional on his part or if it was just kind of induced by drugs.

We’re not sure of that yet,” Allen said.Mitchell was a U.S. citizen who had a home in Oklahoma but apparently was living in Switzerland with his wife, the sheriff’s office said.

Weather forecast: Coldest snap of the year to hit Victoria, Tasmania, NSW

A MONSTER storm is coming our way and expected to cause chaos as it moves through south eastern Australia.It will bring with it what is expected to be the biggest snow dump of the year.

A low pressure system will move over the Western Australia and South Australia border later this week, pushing a cold front over Tasmania and Australia’s south-east this weekend.

South Australia will cop a chilly weekend, with just 6C expected in Adelaide on Saturday and Sunday.Victoria, Tasmania and southern NSW will be hit on the weekend with damaging winds, rain, hail and blizzards.

It is expected to snow down to 300 metres across Tasmania, including some suburbs in Hobart, 400 metres in Victoria and 500 metres in Southern NSW.

There will be massive snow dumps in the Victorian Alps with blizzard conditions.

Up to five centimetres of snow could fall in Ballarat, about 100 kilometres from Melbourne, and 10 centimetres in the Otways near Geelong, south-west of Melbourne.

Massive snow dumps are forecast on the NSW Snowy Mountains, with 100 centimetres expected between Sunday and Thursday.

Between 80 and 100 centimetres will fall on the Victorian Snowy Mountains.

Cradle Valley in Tasmania will cop between 50 and 70 centimetres.

Queensland will remain dry.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon told news.com.au Victoria would experience its coldest snap of the year this week.

Currently snow is down to 800 metres but will reduce to 300 metres tonight as the cold snap moves up from the south-west.

#Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi disqualified from office

PERTH’S Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi has been immediately disqualified from serving on a council for 18 monthsafter the State Administrative Tribunal today finally handed down the penalty over the travel and gifts scandal which has engulfed her for years.

After being found guilty of 45 serious breaches of WA’s Local Government Act earlier this year for failing to properly disclose trips to the 2008 Olympics paid for by BHP, and a trip to the Broome Cup paid for by property group Hawaiian amongst dozens of others, Ms Scaffidi finally learned her fate this morning.

The disqualification will begin at midnight on September 7.The penalty is believed to be one of the harshest ever handed to a serving councillor in Australia, eclipsing the original four-month suspension handed to controversial NSW councillor Salim Mehajer last year, which was overturned on appeal.Ms Scaffid’s lawyer Steven Penglis immediately said he had instructions to apply to have the penalty stayed – or put on pause -until they could appear before the WA Court of Appeal.He said that application would be lodged within 24 hours, and hoped for an urgent hearing before the penalty was due to begin on Thursday.

Ms Scaffidi was found guilty of dozens of breaches for failing to disclose gifts and travel, and also failing to disclose third-party contributions to travel from corporations and governments, following a two-day SAT hearing earlier this year.At that hearing, the Lord Mayor admitted to some of the breaches – including the Olympic trip and the trip to Broome.

But she denied many others, claiming she either didn’t know she was supposed to declare the flights and accommodation, or was unaware the City of Perth had sought reimbursement for the cost of trips to Beijing, Houston, Sydney, the Gold Coast, Seoul, Japan, Spain and New York…

Shocker: Max Verstappen’s run of in-race issues continued at Monza. The Dutchman started from the back end of the grid after an engine penalty and looked primed for a charge through the field, but that lasted all of three laps before he tangled with Felipe Massa.

That left him with a damaged front right tyre and another compromised race.Move of the race: Daniel Ricciardo is something else, isn’t he? Early in the race he repeated his brilliant pass on then-Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel in 2014 on Sergio Perez’s Force India on the run down to the Roggia chicane, cutting one way and then the other with aplomb to sneak up the inside.

But his best move came during his brilliant charge through the field later. Having taken on the super-soft tyre, Ricciardo suddenly looked like a contender for the podium, and closed up on Kimi Raikkonen.

The move itself wasn’t quite as spectacular as his pass on Perez, but involved the Australian braking so, so late and passing the Ferrari on the inside. Someone get that man into a competitive car.

Los Angeles wildfire, largest in city history, menaces hundreds of homes

More than a thousand firefighters battling the largest wildfire in Los Angeles history contended with erratic winds on Sunday, but more moderate temperatures could help contain a blaze that has forced hundreds to evacuate their homes, officials said.

The nearly 5,900-acre (2400-hectare) La Tuna Fire, named after the canyon area near the northern edge of Los Angeles where it erupted on Friday, has destroyed three homes and damaged one.Authorities had evacuated more than 700 homes in a Los Angeles neighborhood and in nearby Burbank and Glendale.

The blaze in thick brush that has not burned in decades was slowly creeping down rugged hillsides toward houses and was only 10 percent contained by Sunday.“Our priority is to put firefighters in a position to protect lives and property,” Los Angeles Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas said at a news conference on Sunday. “There’s a lot of fuel out there left to burn.”

The two men have burns to 20 per cent of their bodies including the face, and one of them remains in a critical condition.Thousands of people have been in Alice Springs for the event this weekend, which brings motoring enthusiasts from across the country to Central Australia.

Australian Formula One star Daniel Ricciardo has put on a scintillating display at the Italian Grand Prix, going from the back of the grid to the brink of the podium at Monza.

Having taken a grid penalty for after power unit and gearbox changes during qualifying, Ricciardo could see the field in front of him.He produced “some good overtakes” as he jumped up 12 spots and finished four seconds behind his third-placed former teammate, Sebastian Vettel, who himself was well behind winner and new championship leader Lewis Hamilton.

The Monza performance mirrored Ricciardo’s British GP race, when he leapt from 19th on the grid to fifth at the end.”I loved it, it was good fun,” the 28-year-old said. “Two of my favourite races this year have been starting from the back — Silverstone and then this one.”

Walter Becker: Co-founder, guitarist of American jazz rock band Steely Dan dead at 67

Walter Becker, co-founder of the influential jazz-rock band Steely Dan, has died at age 67, according to his website, which did not disclose the cause of death.Becker, who played lead guitar, formed Steely Dan with Donald Fagen, its keyboardist and lead vocalist.In its heyday in the 1970s, the band scored hits with Reelin’ in the Years, Do It Again, Rikki Don’t Lose That Number and Deacon Blues.

N Korea: Trump condemns nuclear test, James Mattis warns of ‘massive military response’

North Korea’s biggest nuclear test to date has drawn international condemnation, with US President Donald Trump labelling the move “hostile and dangerous” and his Defence Secretary warning any threat to the US will be met with a “massive military response”

.The explosion of what North Korea said was an advanced hydrogen bomb came just days after it fired a missile over Japan and a few hours after Mr Trump spoke with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe by phone about the “escalating” nuclear crisis.Asked by an ABC America reporter if he would attack North Korea, Mr Trump replied:

“We’ll see.”US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis met with Mr Trump and national security advisers at the White House and had a warning for North Korea.”Any threat to the United States or its territories, including Guam or our allies, will be met with a massive military response, a response both effective and overwhelming,” he said.Mr Mattis said Washington was not looking for the “total annihilation of a country, namely North Korea”.”But as I said, we have many options to do so,” he said.
