Hundreds Gather In Charlottesville To Honor Heather Heyer

The 32-year-old “lost her life defending the lives of people,” a family friend said during the memorial service.

Gone but not forgotten,” a sign above Charlottesville’s Paramount Theater read on Wednesday, an homage Heather Heyer, the 32-year-old paralegal killed over the weekend during the violence that engulfed this city.

Inside the theater, hundreds came together ― many dressed in purple, Heyer’s favorite color ― to honor her memory. Photos of Heyer flashed on the screen ― posing with friends, on the beach, out to dinner, holding a baby.

Kathy Brinkley, a close friend of Heyer’s mother, said the young woman “lost her life defending the lives of people.” Heyer’s grandfather, Elwood Shrader, recalled that Heyer had a passion for justice at an early age, calling out inequalities wherever she saw them.

“She always had a very strong sense of right and wrong. She always, even as a child, was very caught up in what she believed to be fair,” her mother, Susan Bro, told HuffPost in an exclusive interview on Sunday. “Somehow I almost feel that this is what she was born to be, is a focal point for change. I’m proud that what she was doing was peaceful. She wasn’t there fighting with people.”

White supremacists and members of the alt-right had planned a “Unite The Right” rally Saturday to protest the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue in downtown Charlottesville. They clashed with counter-protesters throughout the weekend. James Alex Fields, Jr., a 20-year-old Nazi sympathizer, rammed a car through the crowds, killing Heyer. He has been charged with second-degree murder.

Two state troopers also died after their helicopter ― which was patrolling during the violence ― crashed nearby.

Philippines: 32 Killed in the Bloodiest Night of Duterte’s Drug Raids

Philippine police have killed 32 people in a series of drug raids near the capital Manila, in what’s believed to be the bloodiest night of President Roderigo Duterte’s drug war.

Those killed from Monday to Tuesday in Bulacan province were suspected drug offenders, police said according to the BBC.

Since Duterte came to power just over one year ago, he has waged a brutal campaign to crack down on suspected drug dealers, users and other “personalities” in an effort to clean up drugs and crime in the Philippines. More than 7,000 people have been killed in connection to the drug war, most of those were poor residents of city slums.

According to Agence France-Presse, 67 police operations were carried out cross Bulacan province, resulting in the 32 deaths. Police said 109 others were arrested and illegal drugs and firearms were also seized.

Despite condemnation from rights groups and the international community, Duterte has vowed to press on with his war on drugs, saying last month that offenders would end up “in jail or hell.”

Tanja Ebert young mother murdered: man kills himself as SA Police investigate

THE husband of a missing young woman killed himself at the family’s farm on Wednesday afternoon — just hours after police revealed they were convinced she had been murdered.

Tanja Ebert’s husband, Michael Burdon, had told police the 23-year-old mother of two refused to go home to their remote sheep station in SA’s northeast pastoral region following a trip to Adelaide and left the family car carrying a large sum of money.

She has been missing for more than a week.

At 2.30pm on Wednesday, police held a media conference to say they were treating Ms Ebert’s disappearance as a murder inquiry.

At 5pm on Wednesday, police said a 41-year-old man had died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the family’s property at Oulnina Station — near Mannahill in SA’s northeast pastoral district — some time after the media conference.

Police officers were present at the property at the time but no one else was injured.

Police confirmed to The Advertiser that the couple’s two children — aged 1 and 3 — are safe and in the care of family members.

Injured tourist driven eight hours across Simpson Desert to meet RFDS plane

A French tourist who broke his leg in the middle of the Simpson Desert is driven for eight hours over sand dunes at night.

Rescuing people from remote areas is nothing out of the ordinary for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).

But on Monday night it had a slightly more logistically challenging retrieval from the middle of the Simpson Desert in South Australia, after a French tourist broke his leg in a motorcycle accident.

The patient was brought out by people who had been driving past, a trip that took eight hours over sand dunes at night.

And the airstrip the patient was taken to did not have lights, so the RFDS had to bring their own.

Chief pilot Damien Health said the rescue had been a fantastic effort from everyone on the ground, and the service could not have done it without them.

“We got a call that a person was injured out in the middle of the Simpson Desert. They were about 200km from the nearest runway that we were able to get to,” he said…

‘No one’s born hating another person’: Obama tops Twitter’s most liked list

A tweet from former US president Barack Obama in response to the Charlottesville clashes is the most liked of all time.

“No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin or his background or his religion,” the tweet said.

It has been liked more than 2.77 million times since it was posted on August 13.

The tweet was part of a series of three tweets sent by Mr Obama, quoting late South African president Nelson Mandela’s 1994 biography, Long Walk to Freedom.

“People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love … For love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite,” the other tweets said.

The most liked tweet was posted alongside a photo of Mr Obama visiting a day care facility in Maryland back in 2011.

His tweet came as US President Donald Trump was sharply criticised for waiting too long to condemn the white nationalist groups involved in the deadly clashes.

Jimmy Kimmel: Trump Is ‘Completely Unhinged’ 12min CLIP

Trump defended those linked to white nationalists, neo-Nazis and other racist groups

Jimmy Kimmel used his monologue on the Tuesday night edition of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live to address Trump’s outrageous press conference.

“I think I can say this with reasonable certainty, the president is completely unhinged. The wheels are off the wagon and hurtling through space.”

Kimmel reached across the aisle with both hands as he addressed Trump voters. “ I want to say I get it. I actually do. You were unhappy with the way things were going. You wanted someone to come in and shake things up. You didn’t want business as usual – nothing ever seems to get done – it’s always the same — these candidates make a lot of promises that go nowhere – it happens over and over again…and you’re sick of it,” he admits. “ And then this guy shows up riding down a golden escalator — he’s not a part of the political establishment; in fact, he’s the opposite of that… Let’s roll the dice. Let him get in there and run the country like a business”…

“ He signs a ban on Muslims that he claims isn’t a ban on Muslims. He compliments the President of the Philippines for murdering drug addicts. Hours after a terror attack in London, he starts a fight with their mayor. After criticizing Obama for playing golf, he plays golf every weekend. He accidentally shares classified intelligence with the Russians. He tweets a typo at midnight, wakes up and claims it was a secret message. He praises Jim Comey in October and calls him a coward in June. He fires him. He lashes out at his own attorney general for recusing him from the investigation. He hires the Mooch – and fires the Mooch. He bans the transgendered from the military without telling anyone in the military he’s doing it.

He plays chicken with Kim Jong Un. And that’s just some of the list… If I went through all of it, it would be longer than the menu at the Cheesecake Factory. He is, by every reasonable account — and I’m using his own favorite words here — a ‘total disaster.’… But you’ve been trying to ignore it – because you don’t want to admit that these smug, annoying liberals were right! It’s the last thing you want to do. But the truth is — and deep down inside you know you made a mistake, you know this is true – you made a mistake. You picked the wrong guy.”

It is here that Kimmel makes a bold proposition: removing Trump as President and installing him as the first King of America, a figurehead who’s far away from political power. “ England has a Queen,” he explains. “She lives in a palace – everyone makes a big deal when she shows up – she has no power at all. In the morning, they put a crown on her head and she stands there and waves, she goes back to bed. That’s it. If the Queen were to walk out on her balcony and strip off her top, nothing over there would change. The Queen could be completely bonkers – it would make no difference. She’d still be Queen, it’d still be fine. That’s what we need to do with Donald Trump. We need to set him up in castle – maybe in Florida – lead him to the top, and then lock the door to that castle. Everyone can call him ‘Your Highness’ – maybe we give him a scepter – and that’s that. He can sit there watching Fox and Friends, maybe chip a few golf balls out the window of his tower. There’s no way he turns that deal down – and we need to get creative here because enough is enough. Desperate times call for desperate measures. And I’m asking you, the people who supported Donald Trump, to step in and help for the good of this country. Mike Pence is ready, he’s boring. He’s relatively sane. He looks like a friendly neighbor you would borrow a lawn mower from. Let’s get him in there before it’s too late. Let’s make America Great Britain again!”

You have to admit, the slogan is catchy!

Sierra Leone mudslide: At least 600 still missing in Freetown. 400 Dead

Nearly 400 are dead and 600 are still unaccounted for as rescue efforts continue in Freetown.

President Ernest Bai Koroma earlier pleaded for “urgent support”, saying entire communities had been wiped out.

Nearly 400 people are confirmed dead after a mudslide in the Regent area and floods elsewhere in Freetown on Monday.

The Red Cross has warned it is a race against time to find survivors.

A mass burial of victims is planned on Wednesday to free up space in mortuaries.

Presidential spokesman Abdulai Baraytay told the BBC that bodies were still being pulled from the mud and rubble.

“The entire community is now in mourning. Loved ones are still missing, well over 600 people,” he said.

Meghan Markle gets Royal seal of approval: ‘She’ll be fine’

DATING a member of the royal family must be slightly intimidating — but Suits actress Meghan Markle is handling herself just fine, according to one man who’s done it himself.

Former England rugby player Mike Tindall married Zara Phillips, only daughter to Princess Anne, in 2011. Having married into the royal family, he has a unique insight into the situation Markle finds herself in with boyfriend of a year, Prince Harry.

“It comes with a lot of history and the family that it is. It’s obviously nerve-racking,” he told Sunday People magazine of dating a royal.

“But she has been under enough scrutiny and pressure in her day-to-day life so I’m sure she will get through it. She will be fine…

Khaled Sharrouf, Australian terrorist, believed killed in air strike in Syria

The Federal Government has received credible information that Australia’s most infamous terrorist, Khaled Sharrouf, has been killed in an air strike in the Middle East along with two of his young sons, 7.30 has learned.

Sharrouf and his sons, Abdullah, 12 and Zarqawi, 11, are believed to have been killed by a coalition air strike while driving near Islamic State’s defacto Syrian capital Raqqa on Friday, August 11, according to government officials speaking on condition of anonymity.

7.30 is also aware one of Sharrouf’s brothers has confirmed the death to a small group of Australian extremists via a message which said his brother and nephews were killed by the US-led coalition.

Photos of Sharrouf’s corpse and the corpses of his sons have been seen by members of Australia’s extremist community, a law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity told 7.30…

Trump buoyed white nationalist movement as no president has done in generations

President Trump buoyed the white nationalist movement on Tuesday as no president has done in generations — equating activists protesting racism with the neo-Nazis and white supremacists who rampaged in Charlottesville, Va., over the weekend.

Never has he gone as far in defending their actions as he did during a wild, street-corner shouting-match of a news conference in the gilded lobby of Trump Tower, angrily asserting that so-called alt-left activists were just as responsible for the bloody confrontation as marchers brandishing swastikas, Confederate battle flags, anti-Semitic banners and “Trump/Pence” signs.

“Thank you President Trump for your honesty & courage to tell the truth,” David Duke, a former Ku Klux Klan leader, wrote in a Twitter post shortly after Mr. Trump spoke.

Richard Spencer, a white nationalist leader who participated in the weekend’s demonstrations and vowed to flood Charlottesville with similar protests in the coming weeks, was equally encouraged. “Trump’s statement was fair and down to earth,” Mr. Spencer tweeted.

Governor Terry McAuliffe of Virginia, a Democrat, wasted little time in accusing the president of adding to the divisions that put an unwanted spotlight on the normally peaceful college town.
