#F1 Bottas holds off Vettel to win in Austria with Ricciardo 3rd; REPORT

SPIELBERG, Austria — Valtteri Bottas held off a late charge from Sebastian Vettel to win the Austrian Grand Prix by just 0.6s, while Daniel Ricciardo pipped Lewis Hamilton to the final spot on the podium in third.

The first 68 laps had been a drab affair, but the race came to life in the closing stages as Bottas’ lead came under threat from Vettel. The championship leader was within DRS range for the final two laps, but Bottas managed to resist the pressure and keep the lead — which he had held for all but a handful of laps after his only pit stop.

Bottas had made a perfect start from pole position — so good in fact that Vettel alongside him remained convinced that it was jump start after the race. It was understandable given that the Finn’s reaction time was recorded at just 0.21s, but it set Bottas up perfectly to build a solid lead right from the opening lap. That lead remained comfortable for the majority of the race before coming under threat in the closing stages as a series of blisters opened up on the left rear tyre of car 77. Vettel smelled blood and closed within a second of the Mercedes’ gearbox, only to end up just shy of a proper passing opportunity into the two main overtaking spots at Turns 3 and 4.

Ricciardo had an even tougher challenge keeping Hamilton at bay for third as the Mercedes driver looked to salvage as much as possible from a weekend defined by a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change. Ricciardo had to block the Mercedes into Turn 4 on the penultimate lap as Hamilton got a better run out of Turn 3 and attempted to use the DRS to pass on the outside. But with Hamilton on a set of heavily blistered ultra-soft tyres, the Mercedes driver only got one chance before the rear of his car slipped out of shape in Turn 6 and Ricciardo pulled an insurmountable gap ahead of the final lap.

Hamilton’s fourth place finish rounded off a disappointing weekend for the three-time world champion, which was hamstrung from the moment Mercedes detected an issue on his race gearbox following the previous race in Baku. Rather than risk a failure in Austria, the team opted to put a new gearbox in his car on Saturday and in doing so incurred a five-place grid drop that left Hamilton eighth on Sunday’s grid.

Car 44 fought back in the early stages of the race with passing moves on Sergio Perez at Turn 3 for sixth and around the outside of Romain Grosjean at Turn 4 for fifth. He then managed to leapfrog Kimi Raikkonen with a relatively early pit stop from super-softs to ultra-softs on lap 31 that gave him track position over the Ferrari but also also the challenge of making Pirelli’s softest compound last 40 laps. Despite several radio exchanges about the state of his rear tyres, he was equal to the task albeit just short of making that final passing move on Ricciardo for a podium.

Raikkonen finished fifth after dropping two places from his third place starting position. He lost one place to Ricciardo at the start and then dropped another when he was undercut by Hamilton’s pit stop strategy. Ferrari then tried to retaliate by keeping Raikkonen out on a 44-lap stint to give him fresher tyres at the end of the race, but the Finn simply didn’t have the pace to make it work.

Grosjean kept out of trouble to finish where his Haas started in sixth. At one stage on the opening lap he was as high as fourth, but his car was no match for the Ferrari and Mercedes that ultimately finished in front of him. He crossed the line with a 10 second advantage over the two Force Indias of Sergio Perez in seventh and Esteban Ocon in eighth, while Williams managed to turn an awful qualifying day on Saturday into two points finishes on Sunday, with Felipe Massa ninth and Lance Stroll tenth.

Max Verstappen, who started fifth, was taken out in a first corner collision triggered by Daniil Kvyat leaving his braking too late and tipping Fernando Alonso’s McLaren into a spin. Both Verstappen and Alonso were out on the spot, while Kvyat was issued with a drive-through penalty that ruined his race and left him last on the road in 16th at the finish.

Qld pair found dead inside burning car

Two people have been found dead in a burning car after the vehicle hit a tree northwest of Brisbane.

The car was found ablaze on Sunday afternoon in Wallumbilla North, with early indications suggesting it struck the tree before catching fire, Queensland police said.

The deaths bring the state’s Sunday road toll to four with a cyclist and a teenage driver killed in separate earlier accidents.

The cyclist in his 40s died in a crash with a vehicle on Mt Nebo, northwest of Brisbane, about 7.30am.

An 18-year-old driver was found dead at the scene of a single-vehicle crash at Pittsworth, west of Toowoomba on the Darling Downs, about 9am.

Record temperatures help California wildfires spread as areas are evacuated

Forecasters predict the mercury could soar as high as 110F (43C) in some inland areas and are warning vulnerable people.

It was the hottest in LA since the previous record of 95F (35C) was set 131 years ago.

Two wildfires have spread rapidly and threatened hundreds of homes, forcing evacuations at a lakeside camping ground and a summer camp where children and staff were temporarily trapped.

The blaze that broke out early on Saturday afternoon in California’s Santa Barbara County spread to both sides of Highway 154 and was “completely out of control”, county fire Captain Dave Zaniboni said.

1 dead, 8 injured in shooting at ‘gender reveal’ party in Cincinnati-area home

Nine people were shot — one fatally — late Saturday night at a private residence near Cincinnati, police told reporters at the scene. Three of those shot were children. The fatality is an adult female.

Police were called at 11:20 p.m. about reports of a shooting at a house in Colerain Township, said Colerain Township Police Officer James Love.

Family members tell ABC affiliate WCPO that a “gender reveal” party was taking place at the residence at the time of the shooting.

Love said one person stormed into the party and began firing shots.

“You’re hoping that there won’t be situations like this,” Love said. “These are the nights that you look back on and you regret that they ever happened. This will be one of those nights.”

There is no name nor description of the suspect, Love said, adding that a motive is unknown.

Atthaya Thitikul, 14, becomes youngest ever professional winner with Thailand victory

Fourteen-year-old amateur Atthaya Thitikul has become the youngest known winner of a professional golf tour event with victory at the Ladies European Thailand Championship.

The Thai player finished five under after a level-par 72, two shots clear of Ana Menendez who carded a 75.

Canada’s Brooke Henderson had held the record, winning an event on the Canadian Women’s Tour in June 2012 aged 14 years, nine months and three days.

Thitikul, turned 14 on 20 February.

She said: “It makes me feel very happy and so proud of myself. This trophy, I give to Thailand and the Thai people.”

Henderson’s record for a male or female player came in a 36-hole event, bettering the mark by two days set by New Zealand’s Lydia Ko in January 2012 at the New South Wales Women’s Open.

Power cuts affect 140,000 in Los Angeles after fire at storage plant

More than 140,000 residents were left without power after a blaze at a power plant in Los Angeles.

Power had to be cut to allow firefighters to battle the fire at the Los Angeles department of water and power plant in North San Fernando Valley.

More than 80 firefighters fought the fire which broke out in a storage vault containing 50,000-60,000 gallons of mineral oil.

Local people reported the sound of an explosion but this has not been confirmed.

Much of the blaze on Saturday was out within two hours but firefighters were expected to stay at the scene to monitor possible flare-ups.

Drivers in the area were advised to take extra care as many roads would be without lights due to the power outage.

U.S.-Russian ceasefire takes effect in southwest Syria

A ceasefire deal for southwestern Syria took effect at noon (0900 GMT) on Sunday, the latest international attempt at peacemaking in the country’s six-year war.

The United States, Russia and Jordan reached a ceasefire and “de-escalation agreement” on Friday meant to halt fighting between Syrian government forces and rebel groups in the southwest.

Dockers debutant Ryan Nyhuis hero: Freo clinch 4-point thriller over North Melbourne

RYAN Nyhuis has never kicked a goal at WAFL level.

Yet somehow the lock-down defender became the hero up forward on debut for Fremantle in a four-point win over North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.

Trailing by seven points with under five minutes on the clock, the Dockers were seemingly destined to fade out of the game, with little working for them forward of centre.

With no Cam McCarthy and Hayden Ballantyne having a shocker, it was Nyhuis who stood up and delivered.

The 20-year-old from the Northern Territory got the visitors back within a point with a booming goal from beyond 50. Minutes later he calmly converted a set shot to give the Dockers the lead…

Tour de France Gets Some Much-Needed Chaos in Grueling Stage and a surprise win

The Tour de France hit the most grueling stage of the race so far on Saturday, rolling through the Jura hills so fast that it briefly rediscovered something it had lost in recent years: a little bit of chaos.

The 116.5-mile, up-and-down stage brought a mess of attacks, huge fractures in the peloton, and a surprise win for a French Tour rookie who nearly cramped his way out of contention. Two different riders threatened to steal the leader’s yellow jersey. In fact, the pace was so high that rider Geraint Thomas said there wasn’t even time for a “nature break.”

For fans and Tour de France romantics, it was exactly what this race had been missing. The only group that hated it was the defending champion, Team Sky. Chaos isn’t how the British outfit rode to victory in four of the past five Tours. For a team that obsesses over every nugget of data at all times, chaos is the enemy.

So with 20 miles and a nasty climb to go on Saturday, Team Sky, the deepest, richest team in the sport, did what it does best and killed the party.

Overall race leader Chris Froome and his Sky lieutenants drove the main bunch like a locomotive to close the gaps to their nearest rivals and retain the yellow jersey. (The day’s winner, 24-year-old Lilian Calmejane, isn’t a general classification threat.) Sky is now the first team in 40 years to hold on to the overall lead through the first eight stages of a Tour.

“Really, really tough day,” said QuickStep Floors rider Dan Martin, who took 13th on the stage. “The way Sky rode, and with that finish, you were never going to get anywhere anyway.”
