Trump Cybersecurity Advisors Resign, Cite ‘Insufficient Attention’ More Leaving the Sinking Ship
The resignations came Monday and were acknowledged by the White House on Tuesday. Nextgov has recently published the resignation letter that the departing councilors submitted. According to Roll Call, seven members resigned from the 27-member Council.
But the resigning advisors also said the Administration was not “adequately attentive to the pressing national security matters within the NIAC’s purview, or responsive to sound advice received from experts and advisors.” The letter also zeroed in on “insufficient attention to the growing threats to the cybersecurity of the critical systems upon which all Americans depend,” including election systems.
While he has ordered better security for government networks, Trump has shown little understanding or seriousness when it comes to the broader issues surrounding, in his words, “the cyber.” Most notably, he has refused to accept the U.S. intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia engineered a hacking and propaganda campaign meant to subvert the 2016 presidential election, and even floated the idea of forming a cybersecurity task force with Russia. The administration also missed a self-imposed deadline for presenting a comprehensive cybersecurity plan.

NRL beats AFL to #Perth Stadium opening, with rugby league double-header set for March 10
South Sydney Rabbitohs and Canterbury Bulldogs will host the afternoon and evening matches on Saturday, March 10.
Rugby league will be the first rectangular sport played at the stadium. Only a one-day international between Australia and England on January 28 could stop the NRL staging the first sports event at the venue.
Cricket Australia and the WA Cricket Association still hope to play the match at the stadium.
Last month it was revealed the NRL was lining up the Rabbitohs and Bulldogs for the double-header. Their opposition will be confirmed when the 2018 draw is released.
The 2018 AFL season is scheduled to start on March 22, almost two weeks after the NRL campaign kicks off.
The NRL had been investigating staging its two-day Nines festival at the stadium in February but the tournament was cancelled because of a crowded schedule, with the World Cup being played in Australia this year.
The State Government said the event was the third part of an NRL sponsorship deal which includes a World Cup double-header at nib Stadium on November 12 and game two of the 2019 State of Origin series at Perth Stadium.

Indian court sentences guru to 10 years for rape. Police issue shoot on sight order…
The guru’s followers went on a deadly rampage after he was convicted of rape on Friday.
“The court has ordered 10-year jail term for the accused,” Ram Niwas, senior bureaucrat in charge of law and order in Haryana, told Reuters.
Supporters of Singh’s cult resorted to violent protests last week, which killed at least 38 and injured more than 200 in Haryana state, after a local court found him guilty of raping two women in a case dating back to 2002.
The cult has a vast rural following in the states of Punjab and Haryana.
Police issue shoot on sight order
Police earlier issued orders to shoot protesters on sight ahead of the sentencing of a self-styled guru whose conviction for rape triggered deadly clashes last week.
“We have issued shoot-on-sight orders if anyone tries to start a protest,” said Ram Niwas, a senior bureaucrat in Haryana in-charge of law and order.
Singh’s lawyer told Reuters his client was innocent and would appeal against his conviction.
Authorities imposed curfews in several areas of Haryana and Punjab states, while the capital, Delhi is on alert.
Niwas said Singh would not be taken to court to hear his sentence. Instead, the judge who convicted him would be flown to the jail where he is being held in Rohtak town.
The prison has been transformed into a fortress, with journalists banned from approaching closer than a mile (1.6 km) and roads lined with barbed-wire barricades.

Scientists say the effects of Hurricane Harvey, which has been stalled over the Texas Gulf Coast since Friday and dumped more than 20 inches of rain in some areas, were worsened by a lethal confluence of meteorological events: warm water in the Gulf of Mexico that intensified the rainfall, and a lack of winds in the upper atmosphere that could have steered Harvey away from land.
Exacerbating the situation, said Hal Needham, a storm surge expert and founder of the private firm Marine Weather & Climate in Galveston, Tex., was that the storm surge elevated Galveston Bay, blocking drainage of the rain that pummeled coastal and inland areas.

While Hamilton still held track position when the grand prix resumed after a Safety Car period with 15 laps to go, Vettel had the advantage of running the ultrasoft tyres compared to the Mercedes’ softs.
As the pair emerged at the top of the hill having hurtled nose-to-tail through Eau Rouge, Vettel briefly appeared alongside the Mercedes.
But Hamilton said that he had deliberately allowed Vettel to stay close to him before the Kemmel Straight so that the Ferrari would spend as little time as possible in his slipstream.
Admitting his initial restart “wasn’t great”, Hamilton told Sky Sports F1: “I had power in the wrong setting so as I pulled away I didn’t pull away as I hoped.
“Then he was on my tail into Turn One, struggling with the front tyres and he was too close at the exit at Turn One so he had to lift. Which was actually great.
“Going down the straight [between La Source and Eau Rouge] I let off the power a little bit as well just to keep him on my tail. If he was further away he would have had the chance to gain momentum and pass on slipstream and that’s what he would have wanted so I didn’t give him that.
“So when we got to the top of the hill and he was there, he was facing the full force of the air just as I was so he had no hope. I was really pleased with that move.”
In the pre-podium holding room, Vettel said to Hamilton “that was close” as they watched a replay of their duel, to which Hamilton replied: “I lifted, that’s why you were close.”
The Mercedes driver later said he had been running at 90 per cent full throttle.
“As we were going up Eau Rouge I gave it full power and he had no space to really propel himself and he just pulled out alongside,” Hamilton said.
“It was a cool battle. After that it was nine or 10 laps of qualifying – heavy, fast laps as he was very quick and I had to do some very fast laps to stay ahead.
“I was just thinking I want to win this race. I’ve come here, I’ve told you what I’m coming here for and I’m not leaving here without it. It was a real aggression feel.”
Vettel suggested his restart was possibly “too good” as he got right up behind Hamilton into La Source.
The Ferrari driver added he was then waiting for a mistake from Hamilton which never came.
“I knew that we had a tyre advantage for the first couple of laps after the restart,” said the championship leader. “Exiting Turn One I was all over Lewis and it was not too hard to follow him. Maybe it was too good.
“Overall it was a very good race. It was good fun in the car because I was waiting for him to have an error and he probably was waiting for me to have an error. The quality was very high. I never really had a chance.”

UK Beachy Head toxic gas: mysterious mist hospitalises 230 people
A PACKED tourist hotspot south of London was evacuated and more than 238 people hospitalised after a mysterious chemical mist blew in from the sea.
Hundreds more at the popular Beachy Head were left suffering stinging eyes and breathing difficulties after fleeing the East Sussex coast on Sunday afternoon.
Authorities are baffled about the source of the toxic gas, which some witnesses reported had a smell of chlorine.
Eastbourne District General Hospital was forced to declare a “major incident” as staff in hazmat suits treated people inside pop-up “decontamination” tents.
Witnesses have reportedly said patients were made to change clothes and were hosed down as an extra precaution.
Dramatic pictures show the unusual smog lingering above the sea before moving inland towards revellers enjoying a public holiday long weekend and warm weather at about 5pm on Sunday.

He Who Knows Nothing is really named Aegon Targaryen, reflecting his actual ancestry. (Our vote, “Jon Starkaryen,” was apparently not taken into consideration.)
While last season confirmed Lyanna as Jon’s mother, his father’s identity is now confirmed to be Rhaegar Targaryen, brother to Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and heir to the Mad King’s throne ― before the Targaryen dynasty was toppled.
“Aegon” was the name of Aegon the Conqueror, the first Targaryen ruler in Westeros, and also the name of Rhaegar’s other son, who died in the Sack of King’s Landing (at least in the books).
This means Rhaegar may have named two of his sons Aegon, which is weird, but whatever!

Ironman champion Dean Mercer dies
Former national ironman champion Dean Mercer has died after crashing his car into a fence on the Gold Coast.
It’s believed the 47-year-old father-of-four had a heart attack in the moments before his car came off the road and into the fence at Mermaid Waters early on Monday morning.
Despite receiving medical attention at the scene from paramedics, Mercer was declared dead shortly after being transported to Gold Coast University Hospital.
The two-time Australian champion (1989 and 1995) enjoyed a 40-year career in surf lifesaving alongside his brother Darren.
His niece Jordan is the current Australian ironwoman series champion.
News of Mercer’s death has shocked the surf lifesaving community with Olympian and former ironman Ky Hurst among those to pay tribute.
“Heavy heart today losing one of the greatest athletes of all time,” Hurst posted on instagram.
“Dean was someone I raced most of my career. I looked up to him as an athlete and as a friend.
“He was the perfect roll (sic) model in every way. My love goes out to the Mercer family.”

Trump’s firm sought Moscow real estate deal during presidential run: Washington Post
Trump’s company was pursuing a Moscow real estate deal while he was running for U.S. president in late 2015 and early 2016, the Washington Post reported on Sunday.
The Post report cited people familiar with the proposal and records viewed by Trump Organization lawyers.
The newspaper said investors and Trump’s company had signed a letter of intent to build a Trump Tower in Moscow but the project, lacking land and permits, was abandoned at the end of January 2016, just before the U.S. presidential primaries began, according to several people familiar with the proposal.
The White House initially referred Reuters’ queries to White House special counsel Ty Cobb and later to the Trump Organization. Neither responded immediately to a request for comment.
The Washington Post report comes amid investigations by an independent special counsel and congressional committees into whether Trump campaign aides colluded with Moscow to influence the 2016 U.S. election. Trump and the Russian government have denied any collusion.
In July 2016, Trump denied business connections with Russia and said on Twitter: “for the record, I have ZERO investments in Russia.” He told a news conference the next day: “I have nothing to do with Russia.”

Aussies caught in historic Harvey floods, Texas
With as much as 1.27m of rain forecast in some areas, Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is urging Australians to follow the advice of local authorities and monitor media reports.
Coast Guard helicopters are rescuing residents from rooftops, more than 215 highways in Texas have been closed and 3000 national guard troops have been activated.
Houston is America’s energy capital and the site of US headquarters for Australian companies including BHP Billiton, Santos and Woodside.
“The roads are basically a system of rivers right now,” Geelong native David Bryant, who is holed up in his three-storey townhouse in a southern suburb of Houston, told AAP on Sunday.
Mr Bryant, 41, who works for BHP Billiton in Houston, took in a friend, his seven-months pregnant fiancee and their cats after they had to flee their home in a different suburb when a tornado struck a short distance away and floods threatened.
“We’re planning to just stick tight here,” Mr Bryant said.
“We have plenty of food and water and have not lost power yet.”
With mobile phone coverage and internet still working despite the carnage, Mr Bryant, who is president of the Houston Lonestars Aussie rules club, has been able to keep in touch with his Australian teammates and other expatriates.
Another Australian, Morgan Hughes, a co-owner of Houston’s Platypus Brewing pub, said his home was in the elevated suburb, The Heights, but he was cut off from the brewery.
He could monitor the pub via surveillance cameras and it appeared to have also avoided the flooding.
“A lot of Australians live in The Heights as well and it has become its own island right now so I can’t get to the brewery,” Mr Hughes said.
“I’ve checked in on all of our staff and friends and they have hunkered down and most are fine but some have had some issues.
“I have one Aussie mate who has water in his house.
“It is going to continue be pretty rough.”
Harvey, which hit the Texas coastline on Friday as a category 4 hurricane with 209 km/h winds, has developed into a slow-moving tropical storm that is dumping unprecedented levels of rain on the region.
