US driver faces death penalty after smuggled bodies found in truck outside Texas Walmart

An American truck driver is charged with smuggling dozens of illegal immigrants in his trailer in sweltering heat, an incident that led to the deaths of 10 people.

James Matthew Bradley Jr, 60, appeared in a federal court on a charge of illegally transporting immigrants for financial gain, resulting in death.

“To maximize their criminal profits, these human smugglers crammed more than 100 people into a tractor trailer in the stifling Texas summer heat,” Thomas Homan, the acting director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said.

“Human smugglers have repeatedly demonstrated that they have absolutely no regard for human life.”

Bradley was arrested on Sunday after authorities found eight men dead in the back of his truck parked outside a Walmart store in San Antonio, Texas.

Two more people died later at hospitals and dozens of others were treated for heat stroke and dehydration, officials said.

The truck was registered to Pyle Transportation of Schaller, Iowa.
