Indigenous students from Perth’s Wesley College dance in New York’s Times Square

A GROUP of indigenous students from Perth have captured the imagination of New Yorkers, performing traditional Nyoongar dances in Times Square.

The students, from Wesley College’s Moorditj Mob indigenous program, were in the USA last week and had their hearts set on sharing their culture with a public performance.

After some reconnaissance, they established that a flash mob-style show could be done and after painting themselves at the hotel, they hit Times Square.

Within seconds a big crowd had gathered, taking video and photos, according to Wesley’s Indigenous Program Co-ordinator Ben Lewis.

“The students performed a spirit dance to acknowledge the traditional owners and First Nations Peoples of where the dance was being performed,” he said.
