The White House entered a twilight zone as it tried to explain why Donald Trump accused Barack Obama of having him wiretapped, citing reports which contained no evidence of its claims.
- Trump’s deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders endures a mauling by ABC News’ George Stephanopolous
- He points out that the reports she claimed backed up the allegation entirely failed to do so
- White House says it is basing its claims on New York Times and BBC reports – but they do not mention wire tapping
- Other source cited is Fox News which raised it as a question based on ‘reports’ – which appear to be a Breitbart story talking about Obama’s ‘silent coup’
- But its sourcing is itself murky and White House is now refusing to comment further calling talking about the claims ‘a rabbit hole’
- Sean Spicer, Huckabee Sanders’ boss, makes his own claim that Obama’s most senior spy, who has denied the wire tap, might not have known about it
- FBI Director James Comey is reported to have denied any wire tap took place but has not made a public statement
- But Trump advisers say the president does not accept the FBI chief’s denial – and now Democratic leader Chuck Schumer wants a full investigation
The White House entered a twilight zone world Monday as it tried to explain why Donald Trump accused Barack Obama of having him wiretapped.
Trump’s deputy press secretary endured a mauling by ABC News’ George Stephanopolous as he pointed out that the reports she claimed backed up the allegation in fact did not.
Then later in the day Press Secretary Sean Spicer held his regular briefing off camera where he was hit with question after question on the wire-tapping claims – but said: ‘I’m not gonna go into anything further, as the president noted, until this is resolved.’
In fact the president’s only public statements have been his Saturday morning tweets which aired the explosive claims about wiretapping.
Spicer – who has now avoided cameras at his briefings since last Monday, said he was not going to say any more and added: ‘If we start down the rabbit hole of discussing some of this stuff, I think that we end up in a very difficult place.’
