Helicopter crashes into television tower in Istanbul killing at least five people.

Pieces of the aircraft lay strewn across a road as a witness describes the moment it hit the tower before “spinning” and crashing.

A helicopter has crashed into a television tower in Istanbul in dense fog, killing at least five people.

The Sikorsky S-76 aircraft had taken off from the city’s Ataturk Airport, according to CNN Turk and other local media.

Taxi driver Fikret Karatekin told the broadcaster the helicopter struck the tower before crashing on a road.

“It hit the tower and crashed by spinning,” he said.

It was carrying high-level business executives, NTV television reported.

Images posted on social media showed huge plumes of black smoke billowing from the crash scene in Buyukcekmece district.
