A stretch of the M1 was closed down as a malfunctioning jet came into land at East Midlands Airport amid fears the plane could have crashed into the motorway.
The road was shut to allow the Jet2 aircraft with 153 people on board a ‘clear flight path’ after it reported trouble with its systems.
The motorway was the scene of the 1989 Kegworth air disaster that left 47 dead and dozens more seriously injured when a Boeing 737-400 crashed into the M1’s embankment.
