2 Stuck trains at Penn Station strand 700, rescue train also stalls

The so far, so good Summer of Hell at Penn Station hit a major road bump Saturday when two trains lost power, stranding more than 700 riders — and one of the rescue trains sent to help also stalled.

Amtrak authorities said electrical issues with overhead wires were to blame for the latest woes at the beleaguered transit hub.

The trouble began when a train from Miami carrying 165 people stalled as it entered Penn Station about 11:50 a.m. A rescue train sent to tow that train into the station proved no help when it was stopped in its tracks by the same electrical problems.

“This seems to be an electrical issue,” an Amtrak spokesman said. “The train became disabled just west of the station.”

When the first rescue train couldn’t reach the stalled train, a second locomotive was sent in and towed everyone to safety after about two hours...

Paris and Los Angeles set to get 2024 and 2028 Olympics

Paris and Los Angeles will probably get the 2024 and 2028 Olympics. But which city will host in which year remains to be decided.

The International Olympic Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to break with tradition and award two games at once.

Paris and LA are the only competitors left for 2024. But it’s been clear since early this year that the IOC is leaning toward awarding the next two games at the same time, to streamline the selection process and provide greater financial stability to the games.

Hosting a modern Olympics practically guarantees massive debt and cost overruns, and many cities have abandoned bids recently. Researchers at Oxford’s Saïd Business School estimate the cost overrun for the 2016 Summer Olympics, in Rio de Janeiro, was $1.6 billion.

“Brazil is not a unique case. All summer and winter games that we’ve studied have shown cost overruns,” wrote Bent Flyvbjerg, the lead researcher. “For a city and country to host the games is a huge undertaking and one of the most costly and financially risky megaprojects they can undertake.”

MORE Layoffs At Carrier Factory ‘Saved’ By Trump

More than 600 workers will lose their jobs in the coming months.

Layoffs are set to begin next month at a Carrier factory in Indianapolis that made national news last year for making a deal with President Donald Trump to keep workers in Indiana.

The company said in a filing last month that 338 workers would be laid off on July 20.

“The jobs are still leaving,” Robert James, president of United Steelworkers Local 1999, told CNBC on Thursday. “Nothing has stopped.”

The plant became a campaign talking point in February 2016 when the company announced 1,400 jobs would be moved to Mexico.

After the election, during the transition, Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, who was governor of Indiana at the time, announced a deal in which the company would keep nearly 1,000 jobs at the plant and invest $16 million in the facility in exchange for $7 million in tax breaks over 10 years.

Not all of the jobs were saved.

Ford to move US Focus production to China

Ford Motor Co. will export vehicles from China to the U.S. for the first time starting in 2019.

Ford said Tuesday it plans to move production of its Ford Focus small car from the U.S. to China, where it already makes the Focus for Chinese buyers. Ford will continue to make the Focus in Europe, and will also export some variants of the Focus from Europe to the U.S.

Sales of small cars have dropped sharply in the U.S. and companies are seeking to cut costs making them. Ford’s president of global operations Joe Hinrichs said the move to China will save the company $1 billion, including $500 million for canceling plans to build the Focus in Mexico.

Wary of the response from President Donald Trump, who has criticized Ford for making vehicles outside the U.S., Ford said the move won’t cost U.S. jobs. The suburban Detroit plant that currently makes the Focus will be converted late next year to produce the Ford Ranger pickup and Ford Bronco SUV.

Ford also said Tuesday that it plans to invest $900 million in its Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville to make the new, aluminum-sided Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs. Those vehicles will go on sale this fall and will be exported to more than 55 markets globally, the company said. The investment will secure 1,000 jobs at the Kentucky plant.

But the White House response was muted. Asked Tuesday whether Trump plans to get tougher on China or on automakers who leave the U.S., White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said the president wants to lower business taxes and reform the tax code so businesses will want to “come back to the United States, grow in the United States, manufacture more in the United States.”

‘Hairy rebel’ pleased to be Sir Billy Connolly

Glasgow comedian Billy Connolly receives a knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Scottish comedian Billy Connolly said he was “pleased and a little embarrassed” to get a knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

The 74-year-old Glaswegian said he did not know much about what it would mean.

The star told BBC Scotland: “It won’t really dawn on me until Glasgow people start calling me ‘Sir Billy’ or whatever they come up with.”

He said it felt strange to be welcomed into the establishment as he still thought of himself as a “hairy rebel”.

Tennis coach Judy Murray, pop star Emeli Sande and Harry Potter author JK Rowling are among other well-known faces in Scotland to have received awards.

Preacher who ‘influenced’ London attacker Khuram Butt is ‘still loose’

When news of his potential connection to London emerged, Ahmad Musa Jibril disappeared from his Michigan neighbourhood.

Neighbours of the radical preacher who reportedly influenced one of the London terror attackers have told Sky News of their concern that he is “still loose”.

American born Ahmad Musa Jibril lives in Dearborn in Michigan.

When news of his potential connection to London emerged, he left the neighbourhood and has not been seen for days.

WA’s Alinta Energy sold to Hong Kong company

Alinta Energy, WA’s biggest gas retailer, is being sold to a Chinese company following a dramatic last minute about-face on the company’s proposed $4 billion sharemarket float.

Just a day after confirming the float had been delayed, Alinta revealed today the near 30 hedge funds and private equity owners which own the group had agreed a sale to Hong Kong-based Chow Tai Fook Enterprises.

Controlled by Cheng Y Tung, CTFE is described by Alinta as a holding company with investments across 50 countries.

Alinta’s management team, led by managing director Jeff Dimery, will remain with the group.

The agreement comes just days after Labor won the WA election having waged a campaign against the privatisation of power generator Western Power that was based on the likelihood of it falling into foreign ownership.

CTFE said in a short statement that it intended to grow the Alinta business “by pursuing appropriate investment opportunities in the Australian energy market as they arise”.
