Rookie Aussie shows off golden gloves. Gold medallist Ella Boot making transition from karate to boxing

BLONDE bomber Ella Boot has parlayed her combat mentality as a karate black belt into the boxing gold medal that could springboard her towards Commonwealth Games and Olympic highs.

The pigtails and smile are deceiving because the thump in both hands and ready-made intensity in the ring have created a rookie surprise.

She scoffed at critics who say women have no place in boxing after winning Australia’s single gold in the ring in the 60kg division on the final day of the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas.

“Some people may say it’s not right but I think women should be able to compete in whatever sport they like,” the 17-year-old said.

“I reached second dan black belt and that karate background helps with discipline, determination, everything to do with a combat sport one-on-one.”

Her 3-2 win on split decision over her Indian rival was her 18th victory in 19 bouts and belies the fact she first stepped into the ring just two years ago after a successful junior career in karate with multiple state and national titles.

Her English father Jeffrey boxed in his younger days in east London and having no qualms about a daughter entering the ring is part of her confidence.

They watched Jeff Horn win his WBO world welterweight title on TV together and the inspiration was instant.

“It makes you feel anything is possible in the sport,” the younger Boot said.

“In my first fight (in 2015), I started with a karate stance and my defence was looser than it needed to be but I’ve learnt so much since and still have to.
