Watergate ‘pales in comparison’ to Trump: Former director of the US National Intelligence

A former US national intelligence director says Watergate pales in comparison to events under Donald Trump.

Former director of the US National Intelligence, James Clapper, says events under the Trump Administration are worse than the Watergate scandal.

Speaking at the National Press Club in Canberra, Mr Clapper said he was concerned about an ‘assault’ on the institutions of US democracy under Donald Trump.

‘I think you compare the two that Watergate pales really in my view compared to what we’re confronting now,’ Mr Clapper said.

Mr Clapper also strongly warned about Russia’s influence over the US, saying that Russia is not America’s friend.

He noted the parallels between the Chinese actions in Australia and Russian actions in the US.

‘It is no secret that China’s very active in intelligence activities directed against Australia just as they are against us and that China is increasingly aggressive in attempting to gain influence in your political processes as Russia is in ours,’ Mr Clapper said.

The former spy-chief also criticised the firing of the former head of the FBI James Comey.
