Aussie Caleb Ewan first career win as he claims the seventh stage of Giro d’Italia

Australian rider Caleb Ewan won the seventh stage of the Giro d’Italia in a sprint finish while Bob Jungels held on to the pink jersey on Friday.

For his first career win in the Giro, Ewan finished half a wheel ahead of Colombian rider Fernando Gaviria.

Sam Bennett of Ireland crossed third while sprinting standout Andre Greipel was fourth after the mainly flat but lengthy 224-kilometre (139-mile) route from Castrovillari to Alberobello, which featured an undulating final 40 kilometres.

Ewan, who rides for the Orica Scott team, also won a stage in the Spanish Vuelta two years ago.

Jungels finished in the main pack with the other favorites.

Stage 8 on Saturday is a 189-kilometre (117-mile) leg from Molfetta to Peschici that features a short, steep uphill finish.
