Why is there smoke in the Perth air? Smoke alert issued

PEOPLE woke up to a thick smoke haze blanketing much of Perth this morning, the result of a number of prescribed burns.

A smoke alert was issued for overnight from Perth to Mandurah, including the Perth Hills.

The Department of Parks and Wildlife is conducting a number of prescribed burns, including a burn 10km south-east of Mundaring and a burn 30km south-east of Jarrahdale.

The smoke is expected to lift this morning.

People were warned about reduced visibility on the roads and to shut their doors and windows and turn off air-conditioners if the smoke was particularly thick.

“People with asthma and pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular illnesses should follow their pre-prepared treatment plan. People with conditions exacerbated by smoke should take precautions in line with their medical advice for these circumstances,” the alert stated.
