Allegations Cardinal George Pell sexually abused a choirboy in the 1990s revealed in new book

Cardinal: The Rise and Fall of George Pell by Louise Milligan is set to hit bookshelves on Monday

An explosive new book by an investigative journalist has detailed sexual abuse allegations against Cardinal George Pell, Australia’s most prominent Catholic.

Cardinal: The Rise and Fall of George Pell was written by ABC Four Corners and 7.30 reporter Louise Milligan and is set to hit book shelves on Monday.

In the book, Ms Milligan reveals new details surrounding accusations Cardinal Pell, 75, sexually abused a choirboy, The Age reported.

The alleged abuse was said to have taken place in the back room of Melbourne’s St Patrick’s Cathedral in the late 1990s, with the choirboy then asking to leave the choir, the book alleges.

Cardinal Pell has strenuously denied abuse allegations levelled against him.

There is no suggestion Cardinal Pell is guilty of any allegations of child sex abuse, only that they have been investigated by police.

Cardinal Pell, who was previously the Archbishop in both Sydney and Melbourne, is now serving at the Vatican.

He voluntarily agreed to be interviewed by Victorian Police in Rome in October last year but no charges have ever been laid.

Ms Milligan is said to be the only journalist with insight into the most intimate of stories from those who have made complaints against Cardinal Pell.

In July 2016, she also investigated those complaints for Four Corners.

‘She pieces together a series of disturbing pictures of the Cardinal’s knowledge and his actions, many of which are being told here for the first time,’ the book’s publicity spiel says.

The book also sheds light on claims of child abuse cover-ups within the Church.

‘Conspiracy or cover-up? Cardinal uncovers uncomfortable truths about a culture of sexual entitlement, abuse of trust and how ambition can silence evil.’
