Canberra man Baxter Reid ‘detained for overstaying US visa’ released

 

A Canberra man who says he was detained by United States immigration officials for overstaying his visa by less than two hours has been released from detention, more than a week after being taken into custody.

Baxter Reid, 26, tried to cross from the US into Canada in upstate New York two weeks ago, but was held up at the border by officials.

Mr Reid was detained after the bureaucratic hold-up caused him to remain on US soil past midnight, thereby overstaying his visa.

It is understood Mr Reid held a five-year visa, which allowed him entry to the US for up to six months at a time.

Mr Reid’s American girlfriend, Heather Kancso, and brother Alexander Reid confirmed he was released overnight.

“He was let out. He’s not deported or anything like that, so he can come and go,” Alexander Reid said.

“He was trying to do the right thing in the first place, he was trying to leave
