NSW Woman drugged, stripped + left to die in her own faeces as nurses ignored her

Saddening CCTV images have been released showing how a mentally ill patient who was drugged, thrown in seclusion and was left without water before falling up to 20 times.

The images show the lack of resources in Australia’s mental health system as mother-of-two Miriam Merten was left abandoned, naked, without water and became covered in her own faeces while in seclusion, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Ms Merten had been admitted to Lismore Base Hospital on May 26, 2014, due to concerns over her wellbeing and the mother died on June 3.

The coroner’s report found Ms Merten died from a ‘brain injury caused by numerous falls’ following a long stint in seclusion from 11.50pm to 5.10am on June 1.

During that stint she was reportedly sedated, naked, not offered water or food fort a period of time and covered in her own faeces and her vital signs were not checked despite it being protocol.

The room contained only a mattress and she was being monitored on a video monitor to check on her wellbeing.

Shockingly Ms Merten can be seen wandering the corridor naked and covered in her own faeces while the senior nurse is seen mopping the floor ‘apparently oblivious’ to the patient.

Upon release from seclusion Ms Merten suffered more falls and hit her head.

Corina Merten (pictured left) helped secure the CCTV footage to help raise awareness and funding for mental health resources after her mother Miriam Merten's death (pictured right)The coroner described the scenes from the CCTV footage as ‘horrific’ and as a mentally ill patient she was, ‘treated in such an appalling manner is really beyond comprehension’.

Upon the inquest, both nurses were sacked with the junior nurse reportedly told to ignore guidelines because of ‘poor staffing levels’ during the incident, according to the publication.

In an attempt to raise awareness and resources for the mental health system Ms Merten’s daughter, Corina, helped secure the footage for the publication.

After seeing the distressing images, Mental Health minister Tanya Davies said: ‘My stomach actually turned at one point.

‘I got to a point where I just closed my eyes because I didn’t want to see what was going to come next. I am still pretty much shaken by thinking that was happening to a lady. I was pretty disgusted.’
