Police have uncovered a network of routes that orgainsed crime figures use to traffic weapons, drugs and cash.
Traffic & Highway Patrol Command Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy named the Hume, Sturt, Newell, Silver City and Barrier highways as the major routes for contraband smuggling.
‘Our dedicated officers are trained to expect the unexpected when it comes to stopping a vehicle, especially on these highways,’ Mr Corboy said.
‘Based on the arrests we have seen, there is no such thing as a ‘routine vehicle stop’.’
A number of high profile arrests have been made on the roads in recent times including a 41-year-old truck driver being allegedly found with $2.4 million in cash in his trailer.
Adrian Miller was pulled over for a routine inspection on the Sturt Hwy just over the Victorian border in Mildura , in Victoria’s north-west, on April 5.
Drugs were also allegedly found in Miller’s trailer and he refused to cooperate with the police or reveal any details about the operation.
He did not apply for bail when he appeared at Mildura Magistrates’ Court.
In January police found ‘in excess’ of $1.5 million in a car pulled over for a routine stop on the Hume Hwy at Goulburn.
The vehicle was stopped after police received a tip off and searched the car.
Concealed in the car was $1.2 million in bundles of $10,000 amounts while the owner co operated and helped identify a further $317,000.
On the Silver City Highway in November, $20,000 worth of drugs was allegedly found inside a tin of baby formula when a driver was pulled over for a random breath test in far west NSW.
